PRESS & RÉCLAME
Italian newspapers and magazines in the advertising postcards and posters from the end of the 19th Century to the Fifties

Work divided into two parts: in the first one, the introduction of communication from a cultural and historical point of view; in the second one, the reproduction of hundreds of advertising postcards and posters of newspapers and magazines from the end of the 19th Century to the Fifties of the 20th. Iconographic witnesses of the past, the waves and the evolution of graphic art and of the history of Italy too through the images created by authors among which artists of great interest stand out, recognisable thanks to their expressive language, style and graphic intuitions, next to less famous but certainly not less skilful names.

POSTCARDS A TO Z
Annotated lexicon
Preface by Gàbor Klaniczay

The 497 entries of this lexicon are certainly satisfactory for specialists and, in general, for those who wish to understand their passion as collectors or to turn their simple love for images into critical knowledge.

The character of lexicon, therefore a sort of encyclopaedia, of this volume aims at enlarging the horizon of interests that go beyond postcards themselves, towards those "visual studies" that are assimilating the History of Art inside a wider anthropological perspective.
Words such as "Collage", "Colonial", Documentary", "Woman", "Fascism", "Fragment", "Gruss", "War", "Posters", "Metaphor", "Politics", "Propaganda", "Advertising", "Regionalism", "Stereotype", "Style", "Dematerializing", "Variety" will open wider horizons on postcards as symbols of the so called post-modern condition, anchored to the concreteness of postcards themselves.

The work is completed by a bibliography of almost 800 titles that are an important work instrument.

ADVERTISING IS WOMAN
Images from Attilio Montorsi Collections
Exhibition Catalogue

Surprising are the specimen of great quality and the richness of topics of the present collection of postcards, shown in this exhibition catalogue and coming from Attilio Montorsi Collections, like those published in the previous catalogue " The Female Figure in the Art of Communication". A tale goes by through them accompanying the history of women of the XX century in the evolution of habits and advertising. The leimotif is constituted by the beautiful advertising of the beautiful bourgeoisie: dominating are in fact beautiful women, haute couture and good taste, further to young girls that suggest the use of diverse food products, also passing from cosmetics to medicines and alcohol, from heaters to sewing machines. Some images of the postcards proposed remind of cancan moves, other ones seduce with refined attitudes, other more exalt open space life. Starting from a fast exploring digression, you can notice how most of the postcards exhibited refer to a post-war Italy, finally with a smile on its lips that confidently dishes out its products, certain of their diffusion and trade success in the internal and foreign markets: bicycles, scooters and high-performance motorbikes, automobiles. In the first part of the images shown a Modern Style trace is clearly visible, in other figures a veiled recall to Futurism is discovered, above all in those images with a precise reference to vehicles but also to ice-skaters and to dancers. A more concrete and realistic atmosphere is then to be found, as it appears in the postcards of the "Signorine grandi firme" by Boccasile. The descriptions in support of the images are useful as usual.

THE FEMALE FIGURE IN THE ART OF COMMUNICATION
Images from Attilio Montorsi Collections
Exhibition Catalogue

The exhibition, which the present catalogue has been drawn from, is a selection of over one hundred postcards, coming from Attilio Montorsi Collections, showing how the female figure has been expressed and proposed in the informational and advertising communication from the end of the XIX century to the Forties of last century. Some of the images allow to go over the history and the work of famous illustrators and graphic designers of those times, both Italian and foreign. They can give us a quite precise and exhaustive idea of the female presence and evolution in the field of trade promotion for a product or a public event/exhibition joint to a precise city or village place. It is evident how, from a simple and restful atmosphere, the passage takes place in the Thirties to determined political and propagandist edicts that sing the praises of race and certain victory, through work, savings and sword as defence to Fatherland and woman, seen exclusively as mother. There are in fact postcards where the advertised products are at the service of beautiful ladies; followed by the depiction of beauty and Spring; then we find the use of culture and the celebration of work: industry and agriculture show themselves as the base for a prosperous and safe future. Other postcards remind us of the turmoil of popular glorification in the period of Fascism: certain victory in the war affairs, glorious future of the social and economic enterprises. There are also postcards that sponsor the exhibitions devoted to various fields. The catalogue is enriched with pieces and comments of critics and lovers.

Brindisi - Lecce 28 June 2014

The author, on the occasion of the Bicentenary of Carabinieri Corps (1814-2014), has published a volume narrating its history by means of documents and papers of archival interest: around 220 illustrations of period postcards of the Corps, over 70 unreleased iconographies of front correspondence and of prisoners of World War I and II.

These images document the birth of the Corps and its path in the history of Italy, the wars of Independence, the Expedition of the Thousand, the Taking of Rome, the birth of Legions, Carabinieri on the territories (Crimea, Eritrea, Somalia, Crete, Libya, Albania, Aegean Islands, Ethiopia, Ogaden, Horn of Africa), WW I and II; here included are the iconographies and the unreleased statements that characterize the history of military, whose essential part is constituted by the correspondence from Nazi-Fascist and Allied prison camps. Moreover there are numerous protagonist heroes, from Salvo D'Acquisto to the martyrs of Fiesole and of the Fosse Ardeatine to partisan carabinieri in Cephalonia and Corfu. Last but not least is the Corps in the Navy, in the Air Force and on the territory, up to the present days.

ITALIAN RISORGIMENTO THROUGH PICTURE POSTCARDS
ROME 1870

An illustrated book, written with careful and meticulous study, which traces the years of the Italian Risorgimento thanks to the communication entrusted to the images of postcards. Illustrated, commemorative and recalling postcards printed between end of Nineteenth and early Twentieth centuries, which narrate the Italian events that occurred between 1848 and 20 September 1870, the day of the capture of Rome.

The collection of postcards published in this volume is particularly important because it reveals the glorious events that concern Italy at the time of its formation and birth, from the days of the First Independence War (1848-1849), passing through the subsequent phases of Italian Risorgimento.

These postcards have as their subject the Army, which played a decisive role; it is therefore possible to retrace the heroic deeds of the Italian soldiers, understand their story and evolution and be aware of the role they played in the accomplishment of the Unification of Italy.

CATALOGUE - ITALIAN ILLUSTRATED STATIONARY POSTCARD
The forerunners from 1868 to 1898

The catalogue collects more than 1,100 examples of postcards produced or travelled in the period 1868-1898, reproduced full size, many of them front and back. They are illustrated stationery postcards, which bear from a simple decoration or frame to more lithographic or photographic images, or even hand paintings or drawings in the absence of printed postcards.

The first copies, introduced before the birth of the official "postal stationery" postcard issued by the State, were private editions from commercial activities that used this means of communication at a reduced rate to send commercial news.
Among the economic activities, accommodation facilities (hotels, lodges and restaurants) stood out; they covered the entire national territory and, in addition to their activity, indirectly advertised the tourist resorts. The landscape postcard, also known as "Gruss", was developed above all in tourist resorts, as a souvenir to be sent by post.
The forerunners also include greeting cards, used for year-end greetings or for special events.

The official postal card with overprinted stamp, known as "postal stationery", was introduced for the first time in the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1869; in Italy in 1874.
In 1885 the Empire allowed the private postal card the reduced rate, until then only allowed for the "postal stationery" official postcard.
With a decree dated 20 June 1889, Italy also authorized the use of private postcards at a reduced rate, which however had to be of the same size as the official ones, 110x70 mm.
In 1893 the size of the state postcard became 140x90 mm, so private postcards also adapted to the new dimensions.

Commercial postcards benefited from a reduced rate of 2 cents and had no size constraints; however, they had to contain only commercial news. They had a great development due to their simplicity, comfort and economy.
