THE POST IN MILAN 1849-1859
CATALOGUE OF CANCELLATIONS AND POSTMARKS IN MILAN POST OFFICE

with the cooperation of Gabriele Cafulli, Francesco Luraschi, Massimiliano Ferroni, Giuseppe Antonio Natoli

Description and cataloguing of the Lombardy Venetia postmarks in the Post Office of Milan, from which all correspondence transited, in the period from the introduction of postage stamps to the liberation of 1859. A great variety of uses, shapes, colours, a continuous experimentation of new technologies for the production of handstamps, inks, stamps, papers.

For each handstamp, the characteristics of the impression (size and type of characters); any changes made over time and, when significant for classification, the evolution of the impression in the period of use with different degrees of wearing; the intended use specifying if and when the handstamp was used; the total period of use and the period observed for each intended use; the degree of rarity for each type of use (stamp or cancellation).

Maximum space for "typological" cancellations and postmarks, i.e. those regularly used for a certain period of time or even occasionally in very specific situations. Only a nod is given for the errors in the dates (missing, inverted, etc.) Exhaustive and complete the classification of squared and small circle stamps based on different types in perfect chronological sequence.

Some sections complete the catalogue: examples of the various cases of error in the date composition, registered letters, more details.

Thanks also to the cooperation of enthusiasts and scholars of the most diverse disciplines, the work presents, in addition, Milan postal history from its origins to the end of Austrian domination, the postal reform, postal rates and services, the first and second issue postage stamps, insights, a historical overview.

NOTES ABOUT 20 CENTESIMI POSTAGE STAMPS

The text wants to be of service to those who wish to start learning concepts about a topic quite obscure.

The authors have started observing the 20 centesimi postage stamps because the black overprint comes out in a clean and precise way on the "basic" carmine postage stamp.

By means of images and enlargements, it is possible to observe the features of the overprint and the different varieties attributable to the single positions inside the plate setting.

From the preface by Bruno Crevato-Selvaggi

The process of unification of the postal system came to an end with the law promulgated in 1862 which entered into force on 1st January 1863, the date when the Italian post office was born, and the authors did well to consider it as the beginning of their work.

Everything was different: for each destination, rules, rates, service possibilities, routes. A real jumble in which the sender could extricate himself only with the mediation of the postal service. And, in the materiality of postal documents, all this translated into three great semiotic categories that are recognizable today: postage stamps, postmarks, handwritten indications. A redundant and costly complexity for the sender of the time. Which, however, due to a fascinating reversal of occasions over time, today is transformed into a delight and an exciting field of investigation for the researcher: this is the topic of this volume.

The three categories of signs must be read together to arrive at the decoding of the document; the reading of each postal document (letters and other objects, whether or not encumbered by accessory services) must be preceded by a careful study of the regulations, of the international treaties, in short, of the rules, of which the document is the final outcome. An exquisitely historical way of proceeding, which the authors of this beautiful volume master with certain ease.

It has already been said about the upper chronological limit - 1st January 1863 - and the choice is very correct. The authors explain the lower one: that jumble mentioned above had a first moment of simplification thanks to the creation of the General Union of the Post that dictated the first rules. Then, on 1st April 1879, the General Union became "universal".

THE "LEONI"
A VOYAGE THROUGHOUT PHILATELY AND POSTAL HISTORY

The six chapters (In Italy, War and Post-war period, outside Italy, Peculiar uses, Cancellations, Fiscals) examine the origins, the rates, the types and varieties, the uses of those values issued from 1906, whose subject consists of the effigy of king Vittorio Emanuele III, and whose name brings to mind the artist author of the drawing, Nestore Leoni.

The postage stamps and the postal stationery bearing the cameo effigy of the king of Italy were intended for the most diverse uses, from ordinary to express, air and pneumatic mail, up to advertisement stamps, the so called BLP, and to the overprints for the territories obtained after the Great War (including Bolzano postage due stamps), Italian colonies, domains and offices outside Italy. The effigy was then used for fiscals until the 50's of last century, when Italy had become a Republic and the king was dead.

By using hundreds of pieces including covers, postal stationery and postage stamps, illustrated in colour, the author is able to retrace the "great" history of the early decades of the XX century by means of the many "small" stories arising from them. For the sake of clarity, every chapter contains a chart with the values issued, the period and the relevant kind of use.

STUDY OF ESSAYS, PROOFS AND POSTAGE STAMPS OF THE ESTE DUCHY

With a preface by Thomas Mathà and His Imperial and Royal Highness, Archduke, Duke of Modena, Reggio, Guastalla, Galicia and Lodomeria, Martino of Austria-Este

The Author has devoted almost all his collecting life to the study of the postage stamps of Modena, that means of the Este Duchy.

The work, accompanied by several hundreds of images, is the result of his researches and deepening concerning the whole genesis of the Este postage stamps, including also the essays and the proofs necessary to create the first examples of the postage stamps of Modena.

The reader finds, therefore, a rich and exhaustive compendium of official news, facts and historical and technical events about Modena philately, rebuilding this way an important frame of it.

1867-1870
FROM MENTANA TO PORTA PIA
POSTAL HISTORY OF THE TAKING OF ROME

Postal History Italian Association

The approach followed for this work is detached from a mere and simple historical-postal treatment that sees the taking of Rome as an almost lightning-fast process in 1870. The authors outline the path within the "Roman question", which finds ground fertile for political discussion and military action in the decade preceding the annexation of the city.

In the first chapter there is a careful analysis of the events, accompanied by significant iconographic documentation, in order to fully frame the effects of the events on the postal service, starting with the vain attempted conquest of 1867.
The chapters on civil and military mail of 1870 follow: also in this case the discussion appears not devoid of innovative contents and methods, from a modern historical-postal perspective, which favours the full contextualization of the document within the historical event under consideration.

There is therefore no calendar presentation of the pieces (many those who have made their material available to illustrate the volume) concerning, for example, Rome, but the same documents become testimony and transfiguration of events.

It should also be noted the handling of mail to and from foreign countries during those months and a census of the use of papal postage stamps first and later Italian ones, which again can represent an incentive for the enhancement of the items, as well as to provide new stimuli and ideas for further and in-depth research.

THE ALPS AND MAIL ROUTES

This book was born from the encounter of two cultural interests of the author, the study of human settlements and of the routes across the Alps and his collecting passion for postal history.

The work describes the history of the post through the Alps crossings from the Roman period to the XIX century. It aims at giving an overall picture of a phenomenon that has affected many and different regions over the centuries, by emphasizing not only the postal history perspective but also human stories, the road network, means of transportation and hospitality places. It is a "story" based on texts, news and information collected through the years, addressed also to the reader curious in Alpine crossings.

The passages that have been connecting northern Italy with border countries for centuries are described geographically, while under a historical point of view, the postal history through the Alps ends with the beginning of the big transalpine railways, at the end of the XIX century, which "deleted" an alpine land made of routes and post stations, by carrying bags of correspondence from a plain city to another.

The first part concerns the European postal system evolution from Cursus Publicus to the establishment of the Universal Postal Union in the XIX century, and also the alternate events relevant to the transalpine road network, the means of transportation of the post across the Alps over the centuries and the hospitality history along the roads travelled by the post.

In the second part there is the history of that alpine passes that have been mandatory passages for the international postal services, for nearly two thousand years, recalling the evolution of the services and rediscovering, where possible, proofs of ancient routes and historic hospitality places where mail, goods and travellers could find a shelter during a very often adventurous trip.

The Alps have never been a barrier among people and since the time of emperor Augustus up today, thanks to their structure, the transfer of men, goods and mail has never ceased. The easy passages between one chain and another have made the history of postal relations between Po Valley in the South and central and northern European countries in the North, and the names of these Alpine crossings, often on letter-fronts, still indicate the great doors open in the Continent's heart.

DEMOCRATIC
The ordinary of awakening

From the author's idea of illustrating the uses, postal and non-postal, of these stamps in the two Regency and in the seven Republican rate periods for the domestic mail, even going beyond the postal validity of 31 December 1952, without neglecting, however, the particularities and the cunning of those who used them. All completed mainly by images and captions important to the proposed purpose.

The first part is devoted to the correspondence that underwent the mixture of the several postal values of that period (Italian Kingdom, Italian Social Republic, Regency).
The second chapter is concerned with correspondence objects (letters, postcards, manuscripts, samples, etc.), then accessory services (registered letter, express, air mail, etc.) offered by the institution to allow greater speed, safety or convenience in using the postal service, and then cash services (money orders, interest-bearing bonds, etc.), complementary services (legalization of documents, notification of judicial documents, etc.)
A brief mention to the delegated services where the Post offers itself as an intermediary for the performance of operations not falling within its institutional duties.

The story of the appearance in Milan, in October 1946, of a postage stamp of the Democratic series with a face value of 10 lire, slate colour, of the type issued on 1 October 1945, known as the "fake of Milan", could not be lacking.

On the other hand, the oval marks of exemption from postal taxes of the State administrations are not taken into consideration: in fact, they are supplied to them, not to post offices.

Volume I + II and CATALOGUE OF POSTMARKS ed. I + II

The text represents a complete work about the Italian presence in East Africa from the point of view of post and of philately. It is conceived in two separate volumes with, enclosed in the second volume, the first edition of postmarks catalogue, and now the second edition of the catalogue.

Accompanied by a rich iconographical background (postal documents, maps, views, people), every volume presents, besides a historical-descriptive part: offices of military and civil mail (included some unrealised), rates, postmark (all numbered, divided into chapters and in alphabetical order), postage stamps, postcards, postal traffic, forwarding routes.

In the second volume, at work conclusion, a rich annotated bibliography, an abstract in English and a complete analytical index of the two volumes.

The first volume is about pre-imperial Italian East Africa; nevertheless, the chapters about Eritrea and Somalia are developed up to 1941.
The second volume deals with the War of Ethiopia, the Italian Empire, the second war and the immediate postwar period in those territories.

Also available with the second edition of the catalogue in the LUXURY version.

ITALY IN EAST AFRICA
HISTORY, MAIL, PHILATELY
OFFER 4 BOOKS TOGETHER - LUXURY EDITION

WRITING ABOUT POSTAGE STAMPS
Italian philatelic magazines from the origins to 1945

Analysis of Italian specialized periodicals, from the origins to the end of World War II, which allowed to improve the knowledge on the oldest ones, discovering the existence of bulletins born in small localities or with a short life, and to dissect the events of the most authoritative periodicals, still today a point of reference for studies on classical philately.

In this study, periodicals that, at least in intention, had the objective of becoming a regular publication were taken into consideration; therefore, single numbers printed for philatelic events, newsletters reserved for members of the associations, auctions and sales lists, catalogues and sheets with quotations prepared by dealers have been excluded.

The book is divided into two parts: the first one contains a general excursus on the history of paper philatelic magazines up to the present day; the second one includes some chapters dedicated to the main journals, structured in such a way as to allow an exhaustive overview of the varied world of sector publications with short in-depth news for other periodicals as well. There are curiosities and anecdotes, significant for the life of the bulletin.

In each chapter there is a summary sheet with the fundamental characteristics, referring to the time of constitution:
* title and subtitle
* place and start date (any transfers or interruptions in the issues are indicated in the text);
* founder and legal manager;
* publisher (if the magazine has a publishing house);
* periodicity;
* dimensions (only very significant variations are highlighted);
* known term of the publications (with any notification if it was merged into another newspaper);
* main contributors, found or published in the magazine itself, who have succeeded in the life of the periodical;
* libraries where consultation is possible (those where the greatest number of issues is available are indicated).

LE COLLETTORIE POSTALI DELLA PROVINCIA DI BELLUNO

THE COLLECTING OFFICES IN THE PROVINCE OF BELLUNO
from 1867 to 1917

The purpose of this contribution is to provide an updated and as complete as possible overview of all the collecting offices in the province of Belluno, starting from when, after a long Austrian period, in 1866 it became Italian, until the beginning of November 1917, because during the retreat following Caporetto defeat, all post offices and collecting offices in the province were closed.

In this study the author, using a lot of material also from other collectors and many archival data, did not limit himself to classifying the specific italics, octagonal, squared postmarks, but he went further by also taking into consideration those with large circle, squared circle and guller type.

He did not deal only with postmarks: he went deeper by explaining the functioning of these collecting offices and their evolution.

The table presented is very interesting and, above all, also applicable to many other Italian provinces and situations.
No points or rarity valuations have been assigned.

BRAZIL 1843-1870
The eyes of ox, goat and cat
Royal Mail since 1727 - Pre-philately since 1798

Probably the most important collection of ancient Brazil that a German philatelist has ever put together, a unique set of material, with an introduction to the collection on the historical development and postal history of the country, from its beginnings, but mostly focusing on the 18th and 19th centuries.

The author shows numerous documents from the prefilatelic period and the stamps starting from the legendary bull's eyes, the first stamps, letters with single and multiple frankings, cancellations with the rarest stamps (always on single stamps or letters, on judicial documents with large frankings, ...). And then the prints, the different plates, the plating ...

THE POSTAGE STAMPS OF THE PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT OF THE EX DUCHY OF MODENA
Study and plating of postage stamps, study of forgeries and anthology of the most famous forgers
BRIEF POSTAL HISTORY OF CARPI FROM 1786 TO 1863

This volume, complete with plates and numerous colour images, deals with the study of the plating of the Duchy of Modena Provisional Government postage stamps and the history of the main forgeries of the Duchy and Provisional Government postage stamps, including forged cancellations used.

The plating and detailed study, besides to reconstruct how the composition plates for the various printing must have been originally, above all serve to identify in a plate which individual stamps are certainly original. Those that do not find a place in the plate can be considered as uncertain and therefore worthy of further examination, before being definitively considered forgeries.
The work is accompanied by a brief history of the main forgers who have operated from 1865 onwards.

In conclusion, a short treatise on Postal History of Carpi Office, with the illustration of many letters, including a new find dated 29 January 1513, addressed to Alberto III Pio, last lord of Carpi.
