DUCHY OF PARMA and PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT
Collection of studies

The present monograph gathers a group of studies to offer a general, more comprehensive picture of the issues of Parma, starting with the first ones by the master of philately, Emilio Diena, and going on with those published since 1991 as articles in "Vaccari Magazine".

The volume is divided into two parts. In the first one, there is the reprint of the previous edition of 1989: translation from English of the article which was the subject of a lecture presented by Emilio Diena to the Royal Philatelic Society in 1930 on "Scudetto" issue of 1857-1859 of the Duchy of Parma, published in the September issue of the "London Philatelist", official organ of the "Royal"; and reprint from the original published in 1913 on Provisional Government postage stamps. Both studies are completed with the b/w tables illustrating the complete sheets and have preface by Enzo Diena.

In the second one, there are, illustrated in colour, the study presented in 2002 on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Este postage stamps, which offers a short historical and philatelic introduction about the stamps of the Duchy of Parma and of the Provisional Government, with reference to all the issues and to postal rates; the article about cent.15 rose, first issue; that about cent.5, second issue; the study relevant to cent.40, third issue, with large and small zero; the one about the war of 1859 and the issue of the Provisional Government with reference to cent.80.

ALBERTO DIENA A philatelist - His life, one of his works – "FLATTERING" CANCELLATIONS USED ON THE POSTAGE STAMPS OF THE KINGDOM OF NAPLES AND OF NAPLES PROVINCES

The most fanciful postmarks of the world, the extraordinary "flattering" cancellations of the Kingdom of Naples have always been appreciated by Italian and foreign collectors. The present notes aim at resuming and, whenever possible, revising what has been so far published by the many experts, first of all Emilio Diena, the author's father.

This monograph, in addition to an introduction on the author, deals with the subject in the following chapters:
1 - origins of flattering cancellations;
2 - how many of them are known and where they were used;
3 - subdivision into six groups of six types each and their distribution;
4 - period of use;
5 - localities in which they were used;
6 - postage stamps on which they were used - some of the best known rarities - short notes on mixed franking;
7 - colours used for the impressions - attempts at identifying their origin even without the nominal postmark - postal frauds;
8 - in what types and colours the nominal postmarks were combined with the flattering cancellations;
9 - evaluation criteria for letters with postage stamps cancelled with flattering postmarks;
10 - evaluations of flattering cancellations on pieces or loose stamps.

POSTAGE STAMPS OF THE DUCHY OF MODENA AND OF MODENA PROVINCES AND FISCAL STAMPS OF THE DUCHY FOR FOREIGN NEWSPAPERS

Reprint from the original "scientific treaty" about the postage stamps of Modena, published in 1894 by the Master of Italian philately, Emilio Diena.

Detailed study, based not only on decrees and postal regulations, but also on the analysis of official correspondence and administrative records, hundreds of letters and newspapers bearing Modena postage and fiscal stamps, the present monograph is still a valid reference work, essential for the ones who know only a little about the Duchy of Modena and an interesting work for the ones who love it.

To enrich the volume, three heliotypy and four zincography tables.

Preface to the new reprint by Enzo Diena.

POSTAL CENSORSHIP IN LOMBARDY

Violation of the secrecy of the mail has always been a very usual practice in any time and everywhere, not only towards state and diplomatic letters, understandable even though unjustifiable, but also towards civil and ecclesiastic mail. Everybody knew that, so people used codes and never wrote names or about important events.

This volume deals with the subject in Austrian Lombardy, then Lombardy-Venetia, in one century or a bit more when the Austrian dominated, including French interlude.

Most information comes from the State Archives in Milan.

THE COAST DEFENCE OF THE STATE OF THE ROYAL PROTECTIONS OF TUSCANY FROM XVI TO XIX CENTURY

The strategic need to protect the routes between the southern possessions, Kingdom of Naples and Kingdom of Sicily, and the coasts of Genoa and of the North, as much as the harbours to the Kingdom of Sardinia, led Spain to curve out a sort of enclave geographically corresponding to the promontory of Argentario. The military strategy was the one of the so called Presidios, already tested almost half a century before in North Africa, and consisting of the imposition of strongholds and garrisons in the territory to be controlled.

OFFICIAL CATALOGUE
The present catalogue illustrates fully in colour more than 1000 items exhibited, following the order of the guided route. At the beginning, the volume has been enriched with some introductory essays, and at the end with an exhaustive bibliography.

The exhibition, organized on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Este postage stamps, was anthological and at the same time educational as it showed, with postage stamps, mail and documents, what had been possible to find in private collections.

The volume starts showing how mail was sent before the introduction of postage stamps in the postal system of the Duchy, going on with essays, printers proofs of the types adopted and the franking on mail addressed to the Italian territory and abroad.

On show, also all the impressions and the cancellations used in the 32 postal offices which operated in the Duchy territory; among them some are extremely rare, besides the only known from the postal office in Zocca.

A wide part was devoted to the Risorgimento period (1859 - II War for Independence), showing all the historical and postal-historical events which had taken place in the territory.

A unique presentation was devoted to mail which reached destination in a very short time, quite impossible today even using the present technology such as trains, planes and motorways. In spite of the use of horses, before the slow post experimental trains, thanks to postal agreements between the different states, they could deliver letters sent early in the morning from Modena by the same day in Milan, Florence or Venice, by two days in Turin and by three days in Rome!

Italian Postal Rates from the Italian States to the Taking of Rome 1850-1870

For the first time, all the domestic postal rates of the Italian States before the unification are presented in an elegant and important volume. The summary tables accompany the short text dealing with all the rates for letters, printed matter, samples, also referred to weights and postage other than the first.

The work illustrates, for every State, all the rates from the introduction of postage stamps to the transition to the Kingdom of Italy: during that complex period, between 1859 and 1861, the introduction of Sardinian rates was gradual and distinct in the different regions. The volume continues up to 1866 for Venetia and up to 1870 for the Papal State.

Domestic rates and those abroad with the French mediation have been included. Some short and unknown rate periods enable us to identify important rarities.

However, the present work is really valuable in that it is richly illustrated, with hundreds of high quality colour photographs of the postal documents belonging to the author's collection; they represent the most important rates described. Letters of Lombardy-Venetia, Sardinia, Parma, Modena, Romagne, Tuscany, Papal State, Naples and Sicily lead the readers through an evocative journey in the world of mail during that wonderful period, from 1850 to 1870, two centuries ago.

To complete the volume, some notes, graphically presented to be immediately recognizable, on the rarity of some franking, of which the author has recorded, after accurate research, the number of known exemplars.

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN COLOURS

Preface by Nino Aquila and Francesco Lombardo.

Included in a slip-case, the present work stands out with respect to previous studies thanks to the detailed study, the updates, and the reproductions in colours.

The volume presents the plates life size and divided into four parts with the indication of the main characteristics for each stamp and the distinctive elements for each position in the sheet.
Collectors can compare the original copies checking position and variations.
Described in details even the retouches, reproduced enlarged.

Separately, gathered in a specific sleeve inside the slip-case, the 15 plates reproduced life size and in colours through the stochastic printing system to obtain better image definition and detail preciseness.

On the back of each plate, "fac-simile" has been printed to avoid any frauds.

Bibliography
The author
Why the Comparative Plates of Sicilian Postage Stamps

Shortly after the General Direction of the Post of the Kingdom of Sardinia started selling, as collectibles, the remaining Bourbon stamps seized in the offices of the Island, the study of these magnificent rectangles of coloured paper began. Since then, they have been considered among the best made in the world.
As a matter of fact, a brief comparison with the other stamps available on the philatelic market at the beginning of the 1860's makes the artistic mastery of these Sicilian stamps immediately evident.

In 1863 the first studies of these stamps were published, and they were more and more specialized until Emilio Diena, the Great Master of the Italian philately, marked a milestone when he gave the fruit of his studies to the press in London in 1904. Since then, very little or almost nothing very innovative has been written about postage stamps. Some works, even recent ones, have only slightly dealt with the study of them, but they have brought to light some interesting findings on postal history and postmarks. Emilio Diena dedicated little time to these latter issues, not because he lacked knowledge, but rather because his research was only dedicated to "The History of Sicilian Postage Stamps".
The original edition, published in English in 1904, is practically untraceable. Both the later versions of the book are also difficult to find, the re-print in English, printed in 1969 by Giulio Bolaffi Editore and the Italian translated edition with notes added by Enzo Diena "Emilio Diena - Una vita per la Filatelia" (A Life Dedicated to Philately). The latter was published by the Post and Telecommunications Administration in 1989 on the occasion of the issuing of a stamp dedicated to the Great Master.

Now, in 2009, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Sicilian stamps, a new work, however following in the footsteps of Emilio Diena. Included in a slip-case are the work in colour with the comparative plates which are in all colour and have been analysed in detail in order to present their distinctive elements, and the complete and full size plates.
As one may notice this work is completely new in the layout and printing method implemented as we have not used the traditional four-colour screen or digital printing. This as a consequence of our belief that these two "archaic systems" would damage the fine detailed print of the plates and their portions, which are necessary to better compare them with the originals. We have chosen to use the stochastic printing system, which is also utilized in the reproduction of illuminated manuscripts and works that must be as close to the original as possible, especially in the fine details.
In our specific case, even the tiniest detail must be made visible in order to give the collector the chance to make a thorough comparison of the original stamp with the 100 on the complete sheet. The plates in the volume have been divided into blocks of 25 in order to identify each individual stamp more easily. The main characteristics of each stamp are noted so that one may pinpoint the placement of it and single out its variations caused by the wearing or different inking of the printing plate.
The retouched stamps have been reproduced in an enlarged and colour version with detailed descriptions so that the plating of the stamps on the sheets may be easily identified.

The images of the plates have come from various sources. Those of the grano first plate, first and second state, are the only complete ones in existence and have kindly been loaned by the Diena family of Rome, to whom our sincere thanks are due. The majority of the remaining images belong to our archive, among which some photographs have been donated by the late Bruno Barbacovi (Lavarone 1906 - Dimaro 1987). In addition to studying B.L.P. stamps of the Kingdom of Italy, Barbacovi also dedicated much of his time to building up the plates of Sicily. Others also come from the original sheets or are the result of the rearrangement of large blocks.

It has been said that philatelic collecting has evolved over the years and now tends to focus primarily on postal history. Philatelic collecting has indeed evolved, yet this has occurred much less radically than others may think. There are two different ways to collect and research stamps, yet both have their own undeniable value. However, in recent years there has been a marked return to the antique. This has involved the studying of stamps, among which those from Sicily prevail for their characteristics as they are so varied.

The main reason to publish this work is certainly not to revolutionize what Emilio Diena wrote more than one hundred years ago, but rather it is to offer collectors a simple and updated instrument to study in more detail the wonderful stamps of Sicily, whose undeniable beauty will live on forever.

THE POSTAL HISTORY OF SICILY FROM ITS BEGINNINGS TO THE INTRODUCTION OF THE POSTAGE STAMP

700 pp. - 64 colour tables - b/w ill. - hardbound with colour cover - printed 1998
POINT VALUATIONS
In English

ALSO AS FREE BOOK (class C)

The text comes from the notes and studies by Lorenzo Previteri (the first to make a serious study of the postal history of Sicily in the prephilatelic period), and the book is dedicated to him. Paolo Vollmeier reorganised the material, then translated from Italian into English by Roy A. Dehn.
The study is devoted to the history of the Post under the Bourbons, up until the introduction of postage stamps on 1 January 1859.

This history can be divided into four periods.
1. up to 1535: first regulation for the postal service.
2. from 1535 to May 1786: running of the service contracted out to private persons.
3. from June 1786 to 31 March 1820: in 1786 the postal service was taken back by the state and the first handstamps were introduced in Palermo and Messina.
4. from 1 April 1820 to 31 December 1858: on 1 April 1820 the new postal regulation came into force and 116 post offices were issued with handstamps. Of particular interest are the periods of popular rising against the king in 1820 and 1848/49, which left their mark on the postal service.

Both the later versions of the book are also difficult to find, the re-print in English, printed in 1969 by Giulio Bolaffi Editore and the Italian translated edition with notes added by Enzo Diena, "Emilio Diena - Una vita per la Filatelia".

Included in a slip-case are the work with the comparative plates which are in all colour and have been analysed in detail in order to present their distinctive elements, and the 15 complete and full size plates in a special holder, in two separate editions in Italian and English.
The retouched stamps have been reproduced in an enlarged and colour version with detailed descriptions so that their plating on the sheets may be easily identified.
We must be thankful for Giuseppe La Barbera and Francesco Lao for how they were able to execute their work, that I personally believe was brilliant, when taking into consideration the technology they had available to them long ago in 1858-1859. Not even today, despite all the technology we have available to us, would we be able to convey the charm that only these one-of-a-kind Sicilian stamps are able to exude. They reward us with the feeling of relaxation that we all seek to achieve by closing ourselves off from daily life for awhile.
I humbly dedicate my new work to these intrepid printers and to the great engraver of the steel matrix, Tommaso Aloysio Juvara.

Others also come from the original sheets or are the result of the rearrangement of large blocks, which belong to collectors who decided to remain anonymous but made their material available to me, giving me the chance to make this research as thorough as possible.

Paolo Vaccari took up the hobby of philately and postal history as a child by collecting postage stamps and participating in exhibitions, conferences and seminars. In 1977 he decided to put his wealth of experience and knowledge into practice when he turned his passion into a business to which he could dedicate all his time. THE AUSTRIAN POST IN ROME

The story of a post office in Rome, first Veneto, then Milanese and at the end Austrian depending on the different events from the Medieval times to the first decades of the XIX century, is really fascinating thanks to its diplomatic and historical-political implications. Many scholars have studied the subject from different points of view: legal, diplomatic, historical-political, postal; also the postmarks used in the short period from 1802 to 1809 have been analysed.

In this work the author has collected all the material known, with the addition of some documents which are really difficult to find and some from the State Archives in Milan.

Introduction by Enzo Diena.

Some years have passed since its first publication; however, it still maintains its great philatelic and scientific value.

For the first time a book devoted to the international routes and rates of mail from and to the Old Italian States published in Italy. To allow reaching a broader audience, the authors have preferred to write it in English.

The aim of this book is to explain the postal rates and routes of mail from and to the Old Italian States from 1850 to the introduction of the Sardinian / Italian rates in 1859-1861. In two cases the analysis was extended to 1866 (for Austrian Venetia), and 1870 (for the Papal States). In fact the conquest of Rome, in September 1870, signalled the end of the last Old Italian State.

The countries are divided by continent, and are presented in alphabetical order. Within each country the following information is presented in chronological order.
- In relation to the direct postal Conventions, their effective dates and salient points are indicated. Whenever a direct Convention existed, the postal rates of the two countries were generally equal, except for the rounding of the different currencies.
- When mail was carried with the mediation of a third country, the rates of outgoing mail were generally different from those of the incoming mail. It was also possible to have the mediation of more countries for the same destination.
- The postal routes are indicated when a given mediation allowed for different routings.

The currency in use is indicated with its parity to the main currencies, as this will allow a better understanding of the accountancy markings. In addition, the different weight units and their conversion into grams are stated in order to explain the respective weight progressions of letters and printed matter.
The set of Analytical Indexes was designed to make this volume as user friendly as possible, with a view to allow a quick reference to any desired subject.

POSTAGE STAMPS OF THE KINGDOM OF NAPLES
AND TWO TEMPORARY HALF TORNESE STAMPS OF 1860

In 1858 the first postage stamps of Naples, and on the occasion of the 150th anniversary the study by Emilio Diena about the postage stamps of the Kingdom of Naples.

The well-known monograph, first published in a series of articles in the magazine "Il Corriere Filatelico" between 1929 and 1931, and later in the edition of 1932, is properly considered as Emilio Diena's masterpiece.
The work is the result of several years of research and study in a subject which is really difficult to deal with, due to technical and graphic problems (plates, double prints, papers, shades of colour) and historical and postal-historical aspects.

Emilio Diena was able to solve many issues and to organise the material found in a perfect way so that his work is still a reference point for specialists.

Such a result was obtained even thanks to a team effort: his son Alberto spent several months in Naples to look for the official documentation; Emilio Diena had the opportunity to consult the most important collectors of the time; to plate the "crocetta", he was given the photographs of the 87 copies of that rare 1/2 tornese kept in the Tapling collection by Sir Edward Demy Bacon.

The present new edition, included in the series "the Recoveries", is like the anastatic reprint of 1992, with preface by Enzo Diena, except for its layout.
The three tables on their own with the reproductions of the varieties of the 1/2 tornese Croce di Savoia postage stamp have been included in the volume.
Several illustrations of all the stamps.

THE COLLECTION
OF FONDAZIONE BANCO DI SICILIA
POSTAGE STAMPS

Fondazione Ignazio Mormino of Banco di Sicilia keeps, among historical and antiquarian property, a prestigious philatelic collection, presented in this volume, which is the first of a series devoted to the Foundation's possessions.
The collection includes 1482 items in 900 really rare postal documents relevant to the first issues of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, which were used in 1858 in the Kingdom of Naples and from 1 January 1859 in the Kingdom of Sicily. The latter are known as the most beautiful stamps issued by the Old Italian States: the portrait of Ferdinando II was engraved by Tommaso Aloysio Juvara (1809-1875) from Messina, one of the best engravers in the middle of the XIX century.
To complete the work, the editor, Nino Aquila, has added material coming from private prestigious collections.
In the chapters before the presentation of the stamps, the volume follows the history of the issues in their historical background, the route and postal situation in Sicily in the XIX century, and the formation of the collection.

FROM CARBONARI REVOLTS TO CIRO MENOTTI 1820 - 1831

The History of the sacrifice by the Hero of Italian Risorgimento and of Carbonari revolts from 1820 to 1831 presented through documentary material. The research is based on the original documents of the time, all illustrated, sent or spread by the Postal Service or carried by horse-couriers.

After the Republican revolution, Napoleon period, Murat, Italy is again at the mercy of oppressive governments. Thanks to the improvement of the road system and the following development of communication, information and news about what is happening can circulate easily, thus generating groups of people well informed and aware. Since the resulting rebellion cannot be expressed openly, many secret Societies and Confraternities arise.

The book revisits their story, follows the events and brings back to life the act of courage of a great son of Modena, revolt heart, Ciro Menotti.

HISTORY OF POSTAL COMMUNICATION IN THE ISLE OF SARDINIA
Catalogue and valuation of postmarks and cancellations 1792-1920
By Cagliari Association for Philately and Numismatics

History of postal service in Sardinia and catalogue of all the marks used in the island from the prehadesive period to the 20's of the Twentieth century, the result of many years of research and study of thousands of documents.

The authors follow the development of postal communication in the island through the different historical steps and the political-institutional background, and place the marks in their historical-political context, of which they are unmistakable evidence.

The present work provides many updates to what known before. It includes cancellations relevant to sea and railway services, but not those of military mail and of the Kingdom of Sardinia fleet (1848-1861) as they were not used in the island.

LETTERS FROM THE WAR OF ITALY
ON THE TRAIL OF GARIBALDI'S SOLDIERS

The Authors use postal materials as historical source, relating the historical events to postal history, and vice versa, also thanks to the fortunate recovery of two letters of that period that are systematically analyzed.

The scenery is the enterprise of Garibaldi's Thousand to conquer the Kingdom of Two Sicilies: in this context, the system of postal communications that played a strategic role in it is examined. This central event of Italian Risorgimento is narrated from a different and unreleased viewpoint, highlighting also a slice of the daily life of some participants to Garibaldi's enterprise, exploring for the first time the contents of the letters that often narrate events in a different way.

The book develops in parallel a rigorous postal-historical study of the rates and of the ways of sending mail from and to the Kingdom of Two Sicilies, highlighting the fast changes in postal communication, determined by Garibaldi's advance and by the other events connected to the development of the Kingdom of Italy.

Dealing with a period of war and revolution, the Authors have found some difficulties in finding the norms that determined the changes in the correspondence rates.

TRAVELLING POST OFFICES IN SICILY
Catalogue of the postmarks used by travelling offices and by couriers
from 1862 to 1973

The subject dealt with is related to the non occasional use in Sicily of travelling post offices, both overland and by sea route, that have been working in a period that can be defined "classical" for the Italian postal history, that is the one included in the first century of adjustment of the administrative activity after the Unification of Italy.
An amazing number of postmarks has come out, attesting the fervour with which the development of communications was welcome and encouraged also in Sicily. The largest possible number of the postmarks described has been reproduced in the book.

THE 1/2 TORNESE POSTAGE STAMP OF 1860
"SAVOY CROSS"
Technical-descriptive study with the reconstruction of the table
Second Edition

Introduction by Raffaele Diena

Thanks to the process the authors have used for the plating of each of the one hundred "varieties", through computer comparisons and thousands of photographs available, the identification, with mathematical accuracy, of every position of the "cross" is now possible.

For the present second edition the whole volume has been revised, corrected and enriched in the light of new archive acquisitions and of photographic documentation. In most cases, pictures have been replaced with higher definition ones.
Compared to the first edition, photos are now more complete with all the hundred 'varieties' also of the Trinacria.
Three unreleased sections have been added: the chapter about forgeries, deepened and enriched with an extended treatment of the forgeries by De Sperati, in order to allow for sure their recognizing; an appendix about Trinacria (postal use, cancellations, forgeries); and, in the end, an appendix with the first attempt of reconstruction of the second plate of 1/2 grano of the Kingdom of Naples.

From the preface by Raffaele Diena.
"The present grand work about a sole postal value used only for some months in the period just before the unification of Italy represents, for sure, a display of courage and resolution by the authors. It is not so easy to obtain so many documents and information, even though they had an important reference point in the work by Emilio Diena about the postage stamps of the Kingdom of Naples. [...]besides the postal-historical research, with rates and use of the time, the different steps in the realization and technical characteristics in details, it is quite relevant the fact that the present volume has as its main aim the identification, with mathematical accuracy, of every position of the 'cross'. The authors have concentrated their efforts in this, thanks to the process they have used for the plating of each of the one hundred 'varieties', through computer comparisons and thousands of photographs available."

POST IN THE PROVINCE OF BERGAMO
from the Lombardy - Venetia administration to the Sardinian - Italian one
1850-1866

Completely colour illustrated with the reproduction of letters and postmarks, the work is composed of two parts.
In the first one a description is given of the geographic, political and economic situation of the province of Bergamo in the years over 1859, the year of the annexation to the Kingdom of Sardinia; in this context the postal services on the territory, both in the Lombardy - Venetia period and in the Sardinian - Italian one, are examined too.
In the second part, that constitutes the catalogue with relevant valuations, all the 76 post offices that have operated in the province are listed alphabetically (except Bergamo, country seat, put at the beginning) and classified on the basis of the canceller postmarks used in the period examined.

The pertaining historical administrative period is taken into consideration In the introduction of the different postmarks, for the so called "pre-existing" offices, i.e. instituted in the Lombardy - Venetia period.
For the offices of new institution, created progressively from January 1860, the belonging to the Sardinian - Italian period is implied, therefore the relevant valuation is not conditioned by the peculiar historical period.

The canceller postmark, when unique, or the different and subsequent ones, when more than one, are described for every single office.
Some postmarks, in the period of their use, were impressed with inks in colour different from black, in shades that go from light blue to green.
The first and the last date known are reported for every postmark of every office.

Garibaldine correspondences by and to Ippolito Nievo
Insights into Sicilian postal history
1859-1861

The Sicily of 1859-1861 told through postal history and Ippolito Nievo letters. Some insights into an extraordinary period, with gattopardesche atmospheres, which preceded the Unity of Italy on the island, analysing the effects of revolution on the postal system and the correspondence of a brilliant and idealist young man who spent last months of his life in Sicily following Garibaldi's troops.

From the preface by Giulio Perricone, President of the Sicilian Philatelic Union
"The two collectors authors of this work [...] if on the one hand have added a piece to the history of the patriot who was wrecked on the journey between Palermo and Naples in 1861 [...] on the other have enriched, with a learned publication, the great chapter of Italian postal history, of Sicily, of the Garibaldian period, of the emergency mail systems connected to an insurrectional situation."

From the introduction by Francesca Tamburlini, Head of the Manuscripts and Rare Items Section of "Vincenzo Joppi" Civic Library of Udine
"The text [...] turns the attention on some almost unexplored aspects of these writings, that is on the "conventional" elements and marks found on the envelopes [...] without neglecting the texts of the letters that are resumed and cited to make the meaning of those external signs better understood. [...] The essay of the two authors comes to the rescue and opens up a new world, guiding us from the place of departure of the letter to its final destination [offering] of these Ippolito's documents an additional reading."

with the cooperation of Gabriele Cafulli, Francesco Luraschi, Massimiliano Ferroni, Giuseppe Antonio Natoli

Description and cataloguing of the Lombardy Venetia postmarks in the Post Office of Milan, from which all correspondence transited, in the period from the introduction of postage stamps to the liberation of 1859. A great variety of uses, shapes, colours, a continuous experimentation of new technologies for the production of handstamps, inks, stamps, papers.

For each handstamp, the characteristics of the impression (size and type of characters); any changes made over time and, when significant for classification, the evolution of the impression in the period of use with different degrees of wearing; the intended use specifying if and when the handstamp was used; the total period of use and the period observed for each intended use; the degree of rarity for each type of use (stamp or cancellation).

Maximum space for "typological" cancellations and postmarks, i.e. those regularly used for a certain period of time or even occasionally in very specific situations. Only a nod is given for the errors in the dates (missing, inverted, etc.) Exhaustive and complete the classification of squared and small circle stamps based on different types in perfect chronological sequence.

Some sections complete the catalogue: examples of the various cases of error in the date composition, registered letters, more details.

Thanks also to the cooperation of enthusiasts and scholars of the most diverse disciplines, the work presents, in addition, Milan postal history from its origins to the end of Austrian domination, the postal reform, postal rates and services, the first and second issue postage stamps, insights, a historical overview.

LE ALPI E LE VIE DELLA POSTA

THE ALPS AND MAIL ROUTES

This book was born from the encounter of two cultural interests of the author, the study of human settlements and of the routes across the Alps and his collecting passion for postal history.

The work describes the history of the post through the Alps crossings from the Roman period to the XIX century. It aims at giving an overall picture of a phenomenon that has affected many and different regions over the centuries, by emphasizing not only the postal history perspective but also human stories, the road network, means of transportation and hospitality places. It is a "story" based on texts, news and information collected through the years, addressed also to the reader curious in Alpine crossings.

The passages that have been connecting northern Italy with border countries for centuries are described geographically, while under a historical point of view, the postal history through the Alps ends with the beginning of the big transalpine railways, at the end of the XIX century, which "deleted" an alpine land made of routes and post stations, by carrying bags of correspondence from a plain city to another.

The first part concerns the European postal system evolution from Cursus Publicus to the establishment of the Universal Postal Union in the XIX century, and also the alternate events relevant to the transalpine road network, the means of transportation of the post across the Alps over the centuries and the hospitality history along the roads travelled by the post.

In the second part there is the history of that alpine passes that have been mandatory passages for the international postal services, for nearly two thousand years, recalling the evolution of the services and rediscovering, where possible, proofs of ancient routes and historic hospitality places where mail, goods and travellers could find a shelter during a very often adventurous trip.

The Alps have never been a barrier among people and since the time of emperor Augustus up today, thanks to their structure, the transfer of men, goods and mail has never ceased. The easy passages between one chain and another have made the history of postal relations between Po Valley in the South and central and northern European countries in the North, and the names of these Alpine crossings, often on letter-fronts, still indicate the great doors open in the Continent's heart.

THE POSTAGE STAMPS OF THE PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT OF THE EX DUCHY OF MODENA
Study and plating of postage stamps, study of forgeries and anthology of the most famous forgers
BRIEF POSTAL HISTORY OF CARPI FROM 1786 TO 1863

This volume, complete with plates and numerous colour images, deals with the study of the plating of the Duchy of Modena Provisional Government postage stamps and the history of the main forgeries of the Duchy and Provisional Government postage stamps, including forged cancellations used.

The plating and detailed study, besides to reconstruct how the composition plates for the various printing must have been originally, above all serve to identify in a plate which individual stamps are certainly original. Those that do not find a place in the plate can be considered as uncertain and therefore worthy of further examination, before being definitively considered forgeries.
The work is accompanied by a brief history of the main forgers who have operated from 1865 onwards.

In conclusion, a short treatise on Postal History of Carpi Office, with the illustration of many letters, including a new find dated 29 January 1513, addressed to Alberto III Pio, last lord of Carpi.

Mario Mentaschi - Vittorio Morani
1851-1862 LA STORIA POSTALE DELLA TOSCANA
1851-1862 THE POSTAL HISTORY OF TUSCANY

444 pp. - colour ill. - hardbound - printed 2021
Italian and English text

The idea of a book presenting the Postal History of Tuscany came to the authors after the presentation of Vittorio Morani's collection at the "Royal Philatelic Society London".
It was believed that the exhibition illustrated all the chapters of Tuscan postal history in the period 1 April 1851, the date of the Tuscan postage stamps issue, until 31 December 1862.
With effect from 1 January 1863, an Italian postal law unified the postal regulations of all the Italian provinces, putting an end to Tuscan postal history.

It is the first text that comprehensively deals with the postal use of these postage stamps and explains their use to frank Tuscan correspondence inland and abroad. It also explains the rates applied for correspondence arriving in Tuscany, thus offering a complete overview of the historical-postal situation of the period.

The book is organized in three parts:
- rates for the interior of Tuscany;
- rates of correspondence exchanged with the states of the Italian peninsula;
- rates for correspondence exchanged with foreign states beyond the Italian peninsula.

In each chapter, the evolution of postal rates and postal routes in the period 1851-1862 is presented chronologically. In this period mail was often sent without being franked; these documents, important for a complete description of the historical-postal development, are also included.
The parts illustrating the postal relations with foreign Countries present all the recorded origins and destinations.

To complete the volume, 4 analytical indexes: currencies, contract packets, conventions, postal markings.
