POSTCARDS IN ART
Broken to pieces, twisted, magnified
Preface by Flaminio Gualdoni

Are there artists who have included postcards in their research? How? What is the result? There are many more cases than expected: Utrillo copied them; Picabia took inspiration from them in order to 'murder' painting; Mirò stuck them in his drawings-collages; Hamilton enlarged them so much that the subject became unrecognizable; other pop artists turned them into very large pictures; Dadaists created postcard-works; futurists and expressionists painted them; Munari broke them; postcards were used for artistic installation or short films… And then Picasso, Dalí, Ernst, Baj, Rodcenko, Balla, Duchamp, Steinberg, Ghirri…, or simply unknown artists who have applied their creativeness and innovation to postcards.
Used in many different ways, they have to be considered for their iconographic aspects, but also as advertising and postal means. Here is the universe of mail-art, like a conclusive trial for art itself.
