Specialized classification which considers those varieties useful to differentiate similar postage stamps, printing or types, to be considered as constant varieties: paper, watermark, print, overprint, perforation and perforators. Occasional varieties have not been included.

As far as valuation relevant to watermark position is concerned, there are only used items, often the only ones known.

Compared to the previous edition, it contains numerous updates, among which a complete review of the chapter Essays.
