THE EGYPTIAN MARITIME POSTAL HISTORY
1845-1899
LA POSTE MARITIME EN EGYPTE
1845-1889

Published on the occasion of Monacophil 2019
106 pp. - colour and b/w ill. - cloth-bound with gold inscriptions and colour cover - printed 2019
English and French text

This book gives us a comprehensive and unprecedented historical overview of Egyptian maritime navigation.

Because of its unique location, Egypt has historically been the crossing point of trading and mail routes. Its sea costs stretch a distance of 2.900 km, 1.931 km of which overlook the Red Sea shores and the rest of the Mediterranean. This direct access by sea to both the Est and West, along with the centrality of its location, gave the control of Egypt immense strategic importance.

The author not only names and lists documents, many of which are highly rare, but also places us in the historical context.
His perfect mastery of the various languages in which the Egyptian archive documents have been preserved, enables us to immerse ourselves in the vision of the Egyptians when they were faced with the all-powerful European society during the 19th century. As a result, the shipping companies responsible for transporting mail suffered ups and downs due to the political context and power struggles.

More than a publication about sea mail, this history book takes us back to Egypt during the time of the viceroys and the 19th century, at a time when the Western world is showing a growing interest in rediscovering the traces of an ancient civilisation.

LA CORRESPONDANCE À TRAVERS LES OCÉANS
Des origines jusqu'à 1875

Published on the occasion of Monacophil 2019

English and French text

This work is intended to serve as a practical handbook covering all the different packet ship lines, with a short description of each line, a map showing the routes (missing from many studies), the name of the ships used by the lines (often found in letters) and, finally, an overview of the specific stamps that appear on letters transported via these lines.

The study is divided into five parts: the North Atlantic, the South Atlantic, the Pacific, the Indian Ocean and the letters which have travelled through two or three Oceans, a theme that has, until now, been less widely known and rarely covered. It includes connection routes overland via Suez and Panama.

Each Ocean part is subdivided into two parts: the first dealing with sailing packets from ca. 1674 to 1840; the second with steam packets from 1840 to 1875.
The sailing and packet lines are classified in chronological order.
Rates and ports are not discussed.

Images of the original English broadsheets (postal notes) concerning the packet lines are illustrated, as well as service orders and newspaper advertisement from Belgium, France, Germany and other countries.

LETTERE SULLE ROTTE OCEANICHE DI DUE IMPRENDITORI TOSCANI DEL XIX SECOLO

LETTERS ON THE OCEAN ROUTES OF TWO 19TH CENTURY TUSCAN DEALERS

The book proposes a selection from approximately 300 letters, from 1833 to 1874, of two people from Volterra, Mr. Vito Viti (1787-1866) and his nephew Giuseppe Viti (1816-1860), dealers eager to find a favourable market at the cost of many travels.
Vito Viti settled in Philadelphia achieving high success following his rapid integration into the socioeconomic local life; Giuseppe Viti reached approximately 40 locations around the world in just 25 years. The book reports their successes achieved with the sale of alabaster.

From a historical postal point of view, thanks to the analysis of the external and internal elements of the letters contextualising them with the historical period, those letters help to delve deeper into the complex methods adopted by the postal service, by land and sea in the 19th century, fundamental to share the geographic location and timing of shipments of the products and ensure the transfer of the money.

Their letters, written to their respective suppliers, relatives and friends, are full of testimonies about the geopolitics of the time, commercial secrets, anxieties, attempts to meet other merchants, the desire to have news about the distant family and comments relating to political processes connected to our Risorgimento.

ITALIAN MARITIME POSTAL HISTORY
MARITIME POSTAL COMMUNICATIONS IN THE TYRRHENIAN SEA

With the cooperation of Adriano Cattani

The Ligurian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea in the West and the Adriatic Sea in the East have always constituted a privileged place for maritime traffic, with the routes of the Adriatic Sea depending on Venice and Trieste, whilst those of the Ligurian Sea and of the Tyrrhenian Sea depend on Marseille and Geneva.
The navigation in the Tyrrhenian Sea has always had to deal with the various isles and rocks existing along the route, besides the depth of water.
For this reason it deals with a real compulsory channel, and this is the reason why this kind of navigation can be called "coastal postal navigation", going from the beginning of the wheel propulsion navigation up to the moment when the extension of the railroads has proclaimed the end of the coastal navigation.

Divided into 12 chapters, the book deals with the following topics:
Features and events of the French Maritime Services - The ports of the Tyrrhenian Sea and postal navigation - The port of Naples - The port of Leghorn (maritime postal hub between North and South) - The port of Civitavecchia - The Geneva-Leghorn Line - The postal navigation of the Italian Administration - The Valery Frères & C.ie Company - The Ignazio and Vincenzo Florio & C. in Palermo Company - The Benucci later Calabro-Sicula Company - The Ligurian coastlines - The maritime postal communications between Sardinia and continental Italy.
