THE EPISTOLARY COMMUNICATION FROM AND TO TURIN
VOL.VI - THE "PIEDMONTESE NATION" POSTMARKS (1800-1802)
Second part

The departure postmarks used by Piedmont post offices since the middle of the year 1800, prepared for as many as 102 post offices existing at the time. The offices covered in the first part were 50; in this second part the remaining ones, again in order of first use of the relative mark.

The authors were able to detect unknown postmarks and dates that anticipated or extended the period of use that appeared in Vollmeier's great work.

Considering the places where the High Police Courts were established, namely Turin, Ivrea, Mondovì, Asti, Alessandria, Vercelli, it was possible to establish that the post offices of these localities were the first to receive the departure postmarks of the "Piedmontese nation".

An element that positively characterized the postal service in the Kingdom of France was the use of postmarks, which allowed clerks to apply the correct rates and recipients to know the place from which the letter had left. With the second French invasion in 1800, postal customs from across the Alps made their way into occupied Piedmont. The postal clerks had already noticed the presence of the postmarks on correspondence from France and understood their usefulness. They also knew that this use would sooner or later also be introduced in the Piedmont offices and, while awaiting these postmarks, they were precursors, since they added the name of the departure place by hand.

With the annexation of Piedmont to the French Republic, the Sardinian postal service was also Frenchised and the Paris Post Administration Office sent the new departmental marks, characterized by the department number, to the most important post offices in Piedmont. They replaced the postmarks of the "Piedmontese nation".

ALBERTO DIENA A philatelist - His life, one of his works – "FLATTERING" CANCELLATIONS USED ON THE POSTAGE STAMPS OF THE KINGDOM OF NAPLES AND OF NAPLES PROVINCES

The most fanciful postmarks of the world, the extraordinary "flattering" cancellations of the Kingdom of Naples have always been appreciated by Italian and foreign collectors. The present notes aim at resuming and, whenever possible, revising what has been so far published by the many experts, first of all Emilio Diena, the author's father.

This monograph, in addition to an introduction on the author, deals with the subject in the following chapters:
1 - origins of flattering cancellations;
2 - how many of them are known and where they were used;
3 - subdivision into six groups of six types each and their distribution;
4 - period of use;
5 - localities in which they were used;
6 - postage stamps on which they were used - some of the best known rarities - short notes on mixed franking;
7 - colours used for the impressions - attempts at identifying their origin even without the nominal postmark - postal frauds;
8 - in what types and colours the nominal postmarks were combined with the flattering cancellations;
9 - evaluation criteria for letters with postage stamps cancelled with flattering postmarks;
10 - evaluations of flattering cancellations on pieces or loose stamps.

SASSONE 2021 - CANCELLATIONS
ITALIAN STATES - ITALIAN TERRITORIES IN THE AUSTRIAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIAN LEVANT - KINGDOM OF ITALY (KING VITTORIO EMANUELE II)

The only catalogue with all the cancellations used in Italy up to 1865 has been greatly revised, with updates indicated by the best experts in the subject.

This edition presents point valuations (converted into quotations at the beginning of each chapter) for every cancellation used in the different pre-unity states starting from the pre-adhesive period just before the introduction of postage stamps to the use of "numeral" cancellations.

Moreover, all cancellations used in the Italian Territories of the Austrian Empire, in the Austrian Levant, in the offices abroad, and all French marks used to cancel postage stamps of the Italian area on mail travelled "Via Sea", the cancellations of Navigation on the great Italian Lakes, the use of French postage stamps in the offices of Civil Post in 1859 and 1860, maritime mail, the great Italian harbours.

Compared to the previous edition of 2015, the valuations of the prefilatelic cancellations have been gathered in a single chapter and two new ones have been added: one dedicated to the accessory cancellations; the other to the Third War of Independence (1866), with the listing and valuation of "Austrian" and "Italian" franking and their use in the post offices in Veneto and Friuli.

THE AUSTRIAN POST IN ROME

The story of a post office in Rome, first Veneto, then Milanese and at the end Austrian depending on the different events from the Medieval times to the first decades of the XIX century, is really fascinating thanks to its diplomatic and historical-political implications. Many scholars have studied the subject from different points of view: legal, diplomatic, historical-political, postal; also the postmarks used in the short period from 1802 to 1809 have been analysed.

In this work the author has collected all the material known, with the addition of some documents which are really difficult to find and some from the State Archives in Milan.

Catalogue with valuations

Over the years a lot of important collections have been examined as well as numerous submissions from collectors and lovers have been received.
That has allowed to update the over 75,000 pieces of data contained in this catalogue, which present about 7,000 variations compared with the previous edition. This amount may appear very high; however, one must keep in mind that this sector of cancellations, since the publishing of the Ricci - Vaccari edition of 1992, has kept expanding among the collectors and consequently the research has grown more and more, leading to the discovery of material which had been neglected for years.

In this edition, the historical section has been revised as well and is now totally in colour, even if it has not been necessary to change the text in its substance. The illustration section has been completely changed so that it will be easier to recognize the type of the nominal cancellations which went together with the numeral ones, thanks to the colour pictures.

Bibliography
Paolo Vaccari took up the hobby of philately and postal history as a child by collecting postage stamps and participating in exhibitions, conferences and seminars. In 1977 he decided to put his wealth of experience and knowledge into practice when he turned his passion into a business to which he could dedicate all his time. The postal history and stamp business was enriched with the publishing activity in 1989, together with his daughters, which came to publish important volumes of philatelic literature, some of them written by Paolo Vaccari himself. From this date onward he has published about 100 catalogues and numerous treatises on postal history, among which the "Catalogo Vaccari - Francobolli e storia postale - Antichi Stati Italiani, Governi provvisori, Regno d'Italia - 1850-1900". HISTORY OF POSTAL COMMUNICATION IN THE ISLE OF SARDINIA
Catalogue and valuation of postmarks and cancellations 1792-1920
By Cagliari Association for Philately and Numismatics

History of postal service in Sardinia and catalogue of all the marks used in the island from the prehadesive period to the 20's of the Twentieth century, the result of many years of research and study of thousands of documents.

The authors follow the development of postal communication in the island through the different historical steps and the political-institutional background, and place the marks in their historical-political context, of which they are unmistakable evidence.

The present work provides many updates to what known before. It includes cancellations relevant to sea and railway services, but not those of military mail and of the Kingdom of Sardinia fleet (1848-1861) as they were not used in the island.

ITALY IN EAST AFRICA
HISTORY, MAIL, PHILATELY
Volume I

The text, conceived in two separate volumes, represents a complete work about the Italian presence in East Africa from the point of view of post and of philately.

The first volume is about pre-imperial Italian East Africa and the second one is about the Italian Empire. Nevertheless, in order to facilitate readers, the chapters of Volume I concerning Eritrea and Somalia are developed up to 1941, above all as long as the card-indexing of the offices and their postmarks is concerned.

The study is realised with the maximum historical and documentary rigour; all the information are in fact the result of official and controlled sources. It is useful both to postal history researchers and to collectors, with pages about the organization and the method of services, as well as complete and clearly organized tables of all the post and telegraph offices; for each one of these, all the known postmarks are reproduced. Moreover, the work is accompanied by a rich iconographical background (postal documents, maps, views, people) with images realised with care and reproduced in the original format. The rich quantity of material of every office, that proposes letters and other postal documents left from or arrived there, besides the images of the places and of the environments, represents a quality of the work.

Every volume starts with a historical-descriptive part, followed by the lists of offices and postmarks, divided into chapters like the historical-descriptive part, and placed, in every chapter, in alphabetical order. Every postmark is numbered. Together with the second volume, a catalogue with point valuation is present.

CATALOGUE OF ITALIAN SPECIAL POSTMARKS 1961-1962

Series of studies about postmarks n.12 of A.N.C.A.I. (the Italian national association for collectors of Italian postmarks).

This volume about the years 1961-62 ends the cataloguing of the Italian special postmarks, endeavour that has committed ANCAI for over forty years.
The period up to the beginning of '60ies takes on a great interest and charm, both for the demonstrations it refers to and because the separate services at those times were out-and-out postal offices, as a consequence the material worked is very peculiar.
The author has prepared the present work in spite of the evident difficulties: you only have to remember that press releases of temporary services did not exist at those times and that the complete destruction of the archives makes any research by the Offices of Italian Post impossible. This volume has come full circle, allowing ANCAI to get the credit for the complete treatise of the special postmarks of the whole Italian Postal History.

AEROFILIA ITALIANA 1884-1920
From the Pioneers of Aviation to the "Aces" of the Great War
CATALOGUE OF AIR FORCE POSTMARKS
Pioneering period, Italian-Turkish Conflict, First World War

The historical descriptive catalogue of Italian air force postmarks, with the foreword by Roberto Gentilli, aircraft historian.

In the centenary of Italy's entry into World War I, in 2015, a comprehensive study about all the known (at the moment) postmarks used by the different aviation units (1,423 postmarks listed, from forerunners to the end of World War I), with their rarity point evaluations, based on the frequency of each postmark, of its colour, and of the possible military postmark impressed on the item in question.

Within the Italian-Turkish Conflict, the leaflets in Arab language are listed, for the first time, with their translation into Italian, in addition to the messages dropped from airships to the Italian troops. They add an unreleased element to the history of aviation seen by an aerophilatelist and from the point of view of the history of military mail.

Much interest is given by the little known news about the presence of the Italian aviation units in Albania, Macedonia, Dalmatia, France, Cyrenaica and Tripolitania and of the allied aviation forces of France and Great Britain in Italy during World War I.

Each chapter is introduced by the history of aviation relevant to each period in question (forerunners, Italian-Turkish Conflict and World War I), from balloonists to airship crew members, to the aviators of the Italian Royal Army and of the Italian Royal Navy, and by the relocation of the units, within the historical period examined. That means a chronological history of the Italian military aviation and of the postmarks used from 1884 to 1920, from the pioneering period to the end of World War I (including the two following years for those units that were not disbanded immediately after the Armistice).

Bibliography
From the FOREWORD by Roberto Gentilli, aircraft historian

A current word in the academic field, interdisciplinarity means, according to the official definition, the net of relationships of complementarity, integration and interaction thanks to which different disciplines converge in common principles, tending to approach and unify the isolated parts and the fragmentary moments of the present specialized knowledge.
Fiorenzo Longhi, through his works, [...], has been able to lay a bridge of interdisciplinarity between philately and aeronautic historiography.

"Aerofilia" receives a series of fundamental points from military historiography: the deployment of divisions, news about the airplanes used [...] But, in turn, it offers much more, a series of documents that give confirmation of dates, places, people not by means of statistical summaries or reports, but through living, authentic documents, with dates and places certified by postmarks. [...]

Moreover, research in this volume is so accurate to go beyond the simple confirmation; it brings incontrovertible proof of presence, relocation, time, elements which had escaped aeronautic researchers' attention, thus creating problems and uncertainty, but also new fascinating perspectives.

Interdisciplinarity generated by different passions, but also by a common respect for accurate research and commitment for the preservation of historical memories, enriches us, in the hope that care given to every envelope, to every leaflet thrown from an airplane, to every newspaper sent via air mail, is diffused and of help in order to avoid the small tragedies that occur every time that young people throw their grandfather's old papers into a garbage bin.

But there is a last point that I wish to stress. In the Centenary of the Great War, commemorated even by Italy, a country unfocused, like just a few others, on its own history, the aeronautic historians who discover the world of "aerofilia" are brought back to the human aspect of the conflict.
It is not only a matter of airplanes, of kilos of bombs thrown, of identification numbers or of claiming of shooting down, the objects that its research tends to be restricted to, but of men. [...]

The value of research of "aerofilia", therefore, is not only the corroboration offered to the historical research, but the human dimension it enriches that of, and for which we thank Fiorenzo Longhi.

******************************
From the PREFACE by Fiorenzo Longhi

Different from what, already long ago, has been fulfilled in other countries and in spite of the historical interest of the connected events, a systematic study of the special postmarks impressed on mail and on official documents of the air force units has never been undertaken in Italy.
[...]

The air force handstamps are of various kind, generally in gum and impressed in violet ink.
More rarely in other colours (blue, red, green) or black.
The postmarks used on mail are sometimes the same as those impressed on the usual exchange of documents within the unit.
Other postmarks, instead, lead us to believe that Aviation units had an autonomous form of censorship [...]

The air force postmarks were impressed on mail just to complete, in a rapid, easy and clear way, the indication of the sender, but this kind of completion could have been done also manually.
Not only: even official documents usually lack of the air force or commander postmarks.
It is therefore probable that precise rules had not been dictated, by the supreme authorities, military or of the State, regarding types, sizes, or text, leaving every commander free to choose, and, very likely, the use of special postmarks on mail has been much less frequent in some units than in others.

Adding to all these considerations the long time passed, the fact that only a minimal part of the correspondence is generally kept and that the interest by Italian collectors in this field has always been rather lacking, we can be almost certain that the possibility of the integral completing of the postmarks of all the air force units of the Italian Royal Army and of the Italian Royal Navy [...] has to be considered, if not impossible, highly uncertain.

As regards the historical events of the units of Navy, Airship crew members and Balloonists, I had to draw hardly from various sources, sometimes contrasting, and so I decided to privilege only those few official documents that I have had the luck to trace in private and public archives.
Fiorenzo Longhi was born in Milan in 1938 and lives by Lake Maggiore.
After obtaining the scientific A levels, he graduates in Economics and Business at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan in 1966 and works as director in an engineering company for twenty years.
Since his childhood, he cultivates the hobby of philately and history, and afterwards he passes to the study of postal history in little known fields such as the first issues of the Ottoman Empire and of Ecuador, Italian air mail and the flights of Italian pilots abroad, creating, in the course of years, some important collections and one of the most complete libraries of philately, postal history and aeronautic history.
He is awarded the maximum rewards in the National and World competitive philatelic exhibitions (6 Large Gold Medals and numerous Grand Prix from 1976 to 1978).
Since 1979, he exhibits only in the Honour Class or upon invitation in National and International exhibitions.
He publishes numerous articles, chapters in specialized books, one book and two catalogues, always dealing with little known or unreleased subjects relevant to postal history and aeronautic history.
He is enrolled in the National Register of Philatelic Jury Members since 1982 and he is an International Philatelic Jury Member.
He is enrolled in the Golden Register of Italian Philately since 1979; since 1995, in the Register of Expert Witnesses of the Court in Verbania for Philately; since 1996, in the Philately Category, in the Expert Role of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Crafts and Agriculture in Verbano Cusio Ossola.
He is Life Member of the American Air Mail Society and member of the following Italian and foreign associations: A.I.E.P. THE NEW GAGGERO
Catalogue of squared circle postmarks of the Kingdom of Italy 2016

This second edition of the catalogue introduces numerous changes compared to the first one, brilliantly edited by Bruno Crevato-Selvaggi.
It is not a simple update of the squared circle postmarks of the Kingdom of Italy (1890-1920), though it includes more than 1,200 new findings (now 8,204 postmarks are included in the catalogue): for example, it highlights all the postmarks seen and known for sure up to now, accompanying them with the first and the last year of use known; it shows, in consideration of the particular type of mark, the separation of the writing of the upper crown and of the lower crown, allowing a precise identification; more than 20 pages of introduction with historical details, the origin, philatelic background, criteria of evaluations, shapes and typology of postmarks, point valuations.

The catalogue is divided by region and in alphabetical order by province. Moreover, it is accompanied by a very useful index of places with the relevant number of catalogue and province initials.

It collects more than fifty years of researches by scholars, who have gathered a huge amount of data and who have made it available with great sensibility and collaboration.

TRAVELLING POST OFFICES IN SICILY
Catalogue of the postmarks used by travelling offices and by couriers
from 1862 to 1973

The subject dealt with is related to the non occasional use in Sicily of travelling post offices, both overland and by sea route, that have been working in a period that can be defined "classical" for the Italian postal history, that is the one included in the first century of adjustment of the administrative activity after the Unification of Italy.
An amazing number of postmarks has come out, attesting the fervour with which the development of communications was welcome and encouraged also in Sicily. The largest possible number of the postmarks described has been reproduced in the book.

POST IN THE PROVINCE OF BERGAMO
from the Lombardy - Venetia administration to the Sardinian - Italian one
1850-1866

Completely colour illustrated with the reproduction of letters and postmarks, the work is composed of two parts.
In the first one a description is given of the geographic, political and economic situation of the province of Bergamo in the years over 1859, the year of the annexation to the Kingdom of Sardinia; in this context the postal services on the territory, both in the Lombardy - Venetia period and in the Sardinian - Italian one, are examined too.
In the second part, that constitutes the catalogue with relevant valuations, all the 76 post offices that have operated in the province are listed alphabetically (except Bergamo, country seat, put at the beginning) and classified on the basis of the canceller postmarks used in the period examined.

The pertaining historical administrative period is taken into consideration In the introduction of the different postmarks, for the so called "pre-existing" offices, i.e. instituted in the Lombardy - Venetia period.
For the offices of new institution, created progressively from January 1860, the belonging to the Sardinian - Italian period is implied, therefore the relevant valuation is not conditioned by the peculiar historical period.

The canceller postmark, when unique, or the different and subsequent ones, when more than one, are described for every single office.
Some postmarks, in the period of their use, were impressed with inks in colour different from black, in shades that go from light blue to green.
The first and the last date known are reported for every postmark of every office.

POSTAL HISTORY OF THE NAPOLEONIC ITALY - tome III
THE PLACES OF THE POST
Seats and offices from the Cisalpine Republic to the Kingdom of Italy - 1796-1815 - Catalogue of cancellations - FIRST UPDATE

Over twenty years have passed from the publication of two volumes about the Napoleonic postal history in Italy. In the meantime, various documents related to the postal service and more than few news concerning postmarks have emerged, some of which unreleased, with updating on the periods of use and much more. In this respect, about 130 cards on the total of over 500 are updated here. Almost all news comes from press articles or from the description of lots put on sale by auction houses.
To cite the rarities of some documents, giving information on the number of the items known and the extreme dates of use, evidences verified by the Authors are published.

As far as valuations are concerned, they have preferred not to quote them, this time. Many findings refer to postmarks few common, rare or, in different cases, even unique at the moment. The explanations in the text are anyhow sufficient to value the index of rarity. In some cases, an easier availability following recoveries in archives, has led to reduced valuations.

SOME HINTS OF MILANESE HISTORY FROM THE XIV TO THE XIX CENTURY
THE POST IN MILAN 1849-1859
CATALOGUE OF CANCELLATIONS AND POSTMARKS IN MILAN POST OFFICE

with the cooperation of Gabriele Cafulli, Francesco Luraschi, Massimiliano Ferroni, Giuseppe Antonio Natoli

Description and cataloguing of the Lombardy Venetia postmarks in the Post Office of Milan, from which all correspondence transited, in the period from the introduction of postage stamps to the liberation of 1859. A great variety of uses, shapes, colours, a continuous experimentation of new technologies for the production of handstamps, inks, stamps, papers.

For each handstamp, the characteristics of the impression (size and type of characters); any changes made over time and, when significant for classification, the evolution of the impression in the period of use with different degrees of wearing; the intended use specifying if and when the handstamp was used; the total period of use and the period observed for each intended use; the degree of rarity for each type of use (stamp or cancellation).

Maximum space for "typological" cancellations and postmarks, i.e. those regularly used for a certain period of time or even occasionally in very specific situations. Only a nod is given for the errors in the dates (missing, inverted, etc.) Exhaustive and complete the classification of squared and small circle stamps based on different types in perfect chronological sequence.

Some sections complete the catalogue: examples of the various cases of error in the date composition, registered letters, more details.

Thanks also to the cooperation of enthusiasts and scholars of the most diverse disciplines, the work presents, in addition, Milan postal history from its origins to the end of Austrian domination, the postal reform, postal rates and services, the first and second issue postage stamps, insights, a historical overview.

THE GREAT WAR IN THE CENTENARY
2 VOLUMES + CATALOGUE OF POSTMARKS

Work in two volumes plus catalogue, which illustrates all the Italian Military in the first world war.
After an exhausting, rigorous but narrative and very illustrated postal-historical foreword, the work catalogues all the offices of Military. It proposes for each the timeline of Italy's Unification, the postal-historical one, the life-size replica of all the postmarks known and one selection of documents, with high quality images. The first volume is about all the offices but the Division ones, dealt with in the second volume. The third volume, in smaller format, valuates all the postmark with a well-established point range.

II edition

Second edition of the catalogue that refers to the monumental 2014-2016 work on AOI history, mail and philately, still complete. The volume of evaluations is updated: in the first edition there were only the office names, making immediate reference to the two volumes for their chronology, in this second one instead their chronology is included. To follow, the known postmarks with their evaluations.

The postmarks are always inserted with the same criterion: first the oval ones used as cancellers in the first days of the offices, then the round, the line and the other types; last the Residences postmarks.
On the other hand, the oval marks of exemption from postal taxes of the State administrations are not taken into consideration: in fact, they are supplied to them, not to post offices.
The graphics were also catalogued and reproduced "from life", with the postage stamp portion that they cancelled. The graphics in the recommendation labels have also been reproduced.

Evaluations are expressed in points. Two scales of points are proposed: one applicable only to classical Eritrea and the 1895-1896 campaign, the other to all the rest. Two chapters dedicated to Eritrea: first and second period. For convenience, the office chronology is all in the second period.
Only the stamps used as cancellers are quoted; accessory stamps are only listed.

Also available in the LUXURY version.

THE COLLECTING OFFICES IN THE PROVINCE OF BELLUNO
from 1867 to 1917

The purpose of this contribution is to provide an updated and as complete as possible overview of all the collecting offices in the province of Belluno, starting from when, after a long Austrian period, in 1866 it became Italian, until the beginning of November 1917, because during the retreat following Caporetto defeat, all post offices and collecting offices in the province were closed.

In this study the author, using a lot of material also from other collectors and many archival data, did not limit himself to classifying the specific italics, octagonal, squared postmarks, but he went further by also taking into consideration those with large circle, squared circle and guller type.

He did not deal only with postmarks: he went deeper by explaining the functioning of these collecting offices and their evolution.

The table presented is very interesting and, above all, also applicable to many other Italian provinces and situations.
No points or rarity valuations have been assigned.

DIRECTORY OF AGENCIES AND P.T. DELIVERIES

Postal deliveries, classified as Agencies until 1952, or rather the offices in certain locations given with a license to private individuals upon their request, have always constituted an intriguing chapter in postal history and in particular in marcophilia.

The work is structured by regions in geographical order (from North to South and from West to East), starting with the regional capital city and then moving on to the other provinces in alphabetical order.
Each chapter opens with a list of known services, a table listing the various salient dates of its history. In addition to postal / administrative data and to reproductions of the various postmarks of each office, it includes a historical description of the licensed office (institution, company or hotel), with extensive iconographic documentation.

The work is completed by summary indexes and tables: agencies not considered; agencies in geographical, alphabetical order, by opening date, by type of licensed office.

For marcophiles the attraction of their postmarks is undoubted, both because they are largely difficult to find, and because, although they are ordinary marks, they have in themselves a character of specialty and "out of order", but the volume is interesting and pleasant even outside the philatelic world, as it represents a mirror of almost a century of Italian life, in its economic, political and customs aspects.

History, Post, Philately - vol.1

The work, which for the authors closes a truly broad human and research path, intends to systematize knowledge, propose it in a modern way and create a work that intends to be definitive, at least for many years: the framework that is proposed is well defined. in all its main lines and its interpretative aspects.

Historical text followed by the catalogue of the offices, with their postage stamps and examples of use and the catalogue with the summary and evaluations of the registered stamps.
The main novelty of this volume is the breadth of the context: it is not considered a subject limited in time, but a wide Mediterranean region, which has had various political (and therefore postal) regimes, from the beginning until almost contemporaneity. A broad overview of synthesis that has its roots in classical antiquity and reaches up to the last, difficult years of today's Libya.

1770-1850 TRENTO REGION AND SOUTH TYROL
POSTMARKS CATALOGUE

This catalogue of the postmarks of the Trento and South Tyrol regions is aimed at illustrating, in a concise form, the political and postal histories of the said regions whose territories are nowadays included in the autonomous region by the same name with special statute.

Besides the Catalogue itself with a detailed listing of the postmarks found on mail processed by 52 post offices, this volume proposes the masterful study on postal history of the late August Zoppelli, an excursus on the Menz family and its formidable archive from which a lot of letters showing postmarks, many of them rare or very rare, come.
Another appealing chapter is the one delving into the mail from the Napoleonic military campaigns that afflicted the area from 1796 to 1813. Indeed a turbulent period with a very complex postal history.

There is much more, for example a very informative chapter on postal history, rates and postmarks, postal routes, the various phases of history, the detailed listing of handwritten place of provenance information on the address side of the outgoing mail, the free-frank handstamps accompanied by a detailed and informative listing in alphabetical order, registered mail and its auxiliary postmarks used during the various administrations also with a listing in alphabetical order, and also an exhaustive listing of the various postmarks utilizing a rarity scale from very rare to very common.

A very useful bibliography concludes the impressive volume.

This book traces the military career of the young Bonaparte from the siege of Toulon, where he received his first command to face the enemy, to the fall of the Emperor Napoleon at Waterloo, including Bonaparte successively as General Commander of various armies and then as First Consul.

Each campaign, each battle, is described with an unusual care for accuracy. Through many examples of letters, from Napoleon's correspondence in which he gives precise orders for the day-to-day running of his Empire, to those sent by soldiers in the field, the author lets us see the often very raw reality of what a battle was like in the Napoleonic Era.
All the armies in which he served or he commanded have been put into their historical context, illustrated with documents and letters from soldiers, with their contents, often full of historical information or anecdotes, which help us to understand the life of soldiers, their hopes and their fears.

However, it is not a mere work on history: it is a landmark study of all the postmarks used during the different campaigns over the years of the Consulat and the Empire. Using many tables, all the postmarks are listed, each with it's period of use.
In addition, some themes closely linked to the armies are covered such as prisoners of war, the conquered departments resulting from military victories, letters of "cantinières" as well as other topics.

Through this captivating story we see how a single man can, in a relatively short period in history, lead an entire population to the glory of ruling a large part of Europe, subsequently dragging it to it downfall.
