ITALIAN MARITIME POSTAL HISTORY
MARITIME POSTAL COMMUNICATIONS IN THE TYRRHENIAN SEA

With the cooperation of Adriano Cattani

The Ligurian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea in the West and the Adriatic Sea in the East have always constituted a privileged place for maritime traffic, with the routes of the Adriatic Sea depending on Venice and Trieste, whilst those of the Ligurian Sea and of the Tyrrhenian Sea depend on Marseille and Geneva.
The navigation in the Tyrrhenian Sea has always had to deal with the various isles and rocks existing along the route, besides the depth of water.
For this reason it deals with a real compulsory channel, and this is the reason why this kind of navigation can be called "coastal postal navigation", going from the beginning of the wheel propulsion navigation up to the moment when the extension of the railroads has proclaimed the end of the coastal navigation.

Divided into 12 chapters, the book deals with the following topics:
Features and events of the French Maritime Services - The ports of the Tyrrhenian Sea and postal navigation - The port of Naples - The port of Leghorn (maritime postal hub between North and South) - The port of Civitavecchia - The Geneva-Leghorn Line - The postal navigation of the Italian Administration - The Valery Frères & C.ie Company - The Ignazio and Vincenzo Florio & C. in Palermo Company - The Benucci later Calabro-Sicula Company - The Ligurian coastlines - The maritime postal communications between Sardinia and continental Italy.
