This book should be a window on the epic Napoleonic world that is opened to its readers and testified to by authentic letters from its real protagonists.

Letters sent by soldiers to their parents or wives provide us with an insight into their lives.
We learn how both common soldiers and high-ranking officers continuously travelled the roads, as long as the fighting continued, looking for basic essentials, such as something to eat or a place to sleep.

The author has focused on the highly original theme of mail sent by the second Grande Armée, which was created for the Russian campaign.
This period was characterised by increasing difficulties affecting the organisation of postal services and losses suffered by the serviceman responsible for carrying mail who were hounded by the Cossacks.

The study concludes with an exhaustive list of all the postmarks used by the 2nd Grande Armée.

POST OF THE ARMIES DURING THE FRANCO-GERMAN WAR OF 1870-71

The work focuses on the post services that accompanied the French and the German Armies during the war of 1870-71, characterized by a series of distinguished campaigns.

Six chapters deal each with the military of one of these campaigns, from the French and German point of views.
Two chapters, as well as three enclosures, describe the military correspondence that used other services, civil or private.
Annex A proposes the list of military Post Offices and depicts their postmarks for each campaign.
Annexes B and C inventory the correspondence surviving the sieges of Paris, Metz and Belfot.
Further annexes list the correspondence of the Paris army, the connections of fieldpost or deal with the correspondence of the French Navy, of prisoners of war, or of the one sent by means of the Red Cross.

The conflict appears through the movements of military Post Offices and this book proposes a detailed study of postmarks and of military postal organizations in France and Germany.

The work is based upon military correspondences of every kind, that are richly illustrated and that cast light on this war, that was as short as complex.

LES ARMÉES DE BUONAPARTE À NAPOLEON

THE ARMIES FROM BUONAPARTE TO NAPOLEON
1793-1815

Published on the occasion of Monacophil 2022

French and English text

This book traces the military career of the young Bonaparte from the siege of Toulon, where he received his first command to face the enemy, to the fall of the Emperor Napoleon at Waterloo, including Bonaparte successively as General Commander of various armies and then as First Consul.

Each campaign, each battle, is described with an unusual care for accuracy. Through many examples of letters, from Napoleon's correspondence in which he gives precise orders for the day-to-day running of his Empire, to those sent by soldiers in the field, the author lets us see the often very raw reality of what a battle was like in the Napoleonic Era.
All the armies in which he served or he commanded have been put into their historical context, illustrated with documents and letters from soldiers, with their contents, often full of historical information or anecdotes, which help us to understand the life of soldiers, their hopes and their fears.

However, it is not a mere work on history: it is a landmark study of all the postmarks used during the different campaigns over the years of the Consulat and the Empire. Using many tables, all the postmarks are listed, each with it's period of use.
In addition, some themes closely linked to the armies are covered such as prisoners of war, the conquered departments resulting from military victories, letters of "cantinières" as well as other topics.

Through this captivating story we see how a single man can, in a relatively short period in history, lead an entire population to the glory of ruling a large part of Europe, subsequently dragging it to it downfall.
