FROM CARBONARI REVOLTS TO CIRO MENOTTI 1820 - 1831

The History of the sacrifice by the Hero of Italian Risorgimento and of Carbonari revolts from 1820 to 1831 presented through documentary material. The research is based on the original documents of the time, all illustrated, sent or spread by the Postal Service or carried by horse-couriers.

After the Republican revolution, Napoleon period, Murat, Italy is again at the mercy of oppressive governments. Thanks to the improvement of the road system and the following development of communication, information and news about what is happening can circulate easily, thus generating groups of people well informed and aware. Since the resulting rebellion cannot be expressed openly, many secret Societies and Confraternities arise.

The book revisits their story, follows the events and brings back to life the act of courage of a great son of Modena, revolt heart, Ciro Menotti.

1866. THE THIRD WAR OF INDEPENDENCE.
ITALIAN MILITARY

The working method adopted by the Authors has much recourse to archive documentation, to newspapers, printed material and posters of that time.

The first part, that is the result of multi-decennial researches in various private and public archives and especially in the Central one of the Italian State in Rome, presents a documentation that may be considered exhaustive of the activity of Italian Military in the year 1866. It also offers the composition of every Office of Military with the names of the various employees and even the compensation collected by them during this military campaign.
The documentation widely resorts to the postal norms in force: this is the reason for the opportune reproduction of laws, decrees, ordinances and newsletters published by various sources, especially about the important and precious "Bullettini postali" of 1866.

The second part, richly illustrated and presented by means of efficacious graphics, is the inventory, divided by office of Military, of the letters found out up to now (only 680 to April 2014). The overall data and then those of every single office have persuaded the Authors not to fix points nor to give evaluations to the various postmarks of Military. A reasonable and motivated choice that, reading numbers, readers will share too.

Every postal document is studied and described in every part: franking, rates and taxations, origins and destinations, disinfections and any other postal mark. Starting from the postmarks of the numerous offices operating in the two distinct phases of the Military System, all reproduced and illustrated in their peculiar use.

LETTERS FROM THE WAR OF ITALY
ON THE TRAIL OF GARIBALDI'S SOLDIERS

The Authors use postal materials as historical source, relating the historical events to postal history, and vice versa, also thanks to the fortunate recovery of two letters of that period that are systematically analyzed.

The scenery is the enterprise of Garibaldi's Thousand to conquer the Kingdom of Two Sicilies: in this context, the system of postal communications that played a strategic role in it is examined. This central event of Italian Risorgimento is narrated from a different and unreleased viewpoint, highlighting also a slice of the daily life of some participants to Garibaldi's enterprise, exploring for the first time the contents of the letters that often narrate events in a different way.

The book develops in parallel a rigorous postal-historical study of the rates and of the ways of sending mail from and to the Kingdom of Two Sicilies, highlighting the fast changes in postal communication, determined by Garibaldi's advance and by the other events connected to the development of the Kingdom of Italy.

Dealing with a period of war and revolution, the Authors have found some difficulties in finding the norms that determined the changes in the correspondence rates.

POSTAL HISTORY OF THE NAPOLEONIC ITALY - tome III
THE PLACES OF THE POST
Seats and offices from the Cisalpine Republic to the Kingdom of Italy - 1796-1815 - Catalogue of cancellations - FIRST UPDATE

Over twenty years have passed from the publication of two volumes about the Napoleonic postal history in Italy. In the meantime, various documents related to the postal service and more than few news concerning postmarks have emerged, some of which unreleased, with updating on the periods of use and much more. In this respect, about 130 cards on the total of over 500 are updated here. Almost all news comes from press articles or from the description of lots put on sale by auction houses.
To cite the rarities of some documents, giving information on the number of the items known and the extreme dates of use, evidences verified by the Authors are published.

As far as valuations are concerned, they have preferred not to quote them, this time. Many findings refer to postmarks few common, rare or, in different cases, even unique at the moment. The explanations in the text are anyhow sufficient to value the index of rarity. In some cases, an easier availability following recoveries in archives, has led to reduced valuations.

FROM MENTANA TO PORTA PIA
POSTAL HISTORY OF THE TAKING OF ROME

Postal History Italian Association

The approach followed for this work is detached from a mere and simple historical-postal treatment that sees the taking of Rome as an almost lightning-fast process in 1870. The authors outline the path within the "Roman question", which finds ground fertile for political discussion and military action in the decade preceding the annexation of the city.

In the first chapter there is a careful analysis of the events, accompanied by significant iconographic documentation, in order to fully frame the effects of the events on the postal service, starting with the vain attempted conquest of 1867.
The chapters on civil and military mail of 1870 follow: also in this case the discussion appears not devoid of innovative contents and methods, from a modern historical-postal perspective, which favours the full contextualization of the document within the historical event under consideration.

There is therefore no calendar presentation of the pieces (many those who have made their material available to illustrate the volume) concerning, for example, Rome, but the same documents become testimony and transfiguration of events.

It should also be noted the handling of mail to and from foreign countries during those months and a census of the use of papal postage stamps first and later Italian ones, which again can represent an incentive for the enhancement of the items, as well as to provide new stimuli and ideas for further and in-depth research.

ITALIAN RISORGIMENTO THROUGH PICTURE POSTCARDS
ROME 1870

An illustrated book, written with careful and meticulous study, which traces the years of the Italian Risorgimento thanks to the communication entrusted to the images of postcards. Illustrated, commemorative and recalling postcards printed between end of Nineteenth and early Twentieth centuries, which narrate the Italian events that occurred between 1848 and 20 September 1870, the day of the capture of Rome.

The collection of postcards published in this volume is particularly important because it reveals the glorious events that concern Italy at the time of its formation and birth, from the days of the First Independence War (1848-1849), passing through the subsequent phases of Italian Risorgimento.

These postcards have as their subject the Army, which played a decisive role; it is therefore possible to retrace the heroic deeds of the Italian soldiers, understand their story and evolution and be aware of the role they played in the accomplishment of the Unification of Italy.
