THE AUSTRIAN POST IN ROME

The story of a post office in Rome, first Veneto, then Milanese and at the end Austrian depending on the different events from the Medieval times to the first decades of the XIX century, is really fascinating thanks to its diplomatic and historical-political implications. Many scholars have studied the subject from different points of view: legal, diplomatic, historical-political, postal; also the postmarks used in the short period from 1802 to 1809 have been analysed.

In this work the author has collected all the material known, with the addition of some documents which are really difficult to find and some from the State Archives in Milan.

For the first time a book devoted to the international routes and rates of mail from and to the Old Italian States published in Italy. To allow reaching a broader audience, the authors have preferred to write it in English.

The aim of this book is to explain the postal rates and routes of mail from and to the Old Italian States from 1850 to the introduction of the Sardinian / Italian rates in 1859-1861. In two cases the analysis was extended to 1866 (for Austrian Venetia), and 1870 (for the Papal States). In fact the conquest of Rome, in September 1870, signalled the end of the last Old Italian State.

The countries are divided by continent, and are presented in alphabetical order. Within each country the following information is presented in chronological order.
- In relation to the direct postal Conventions, their effective dates and salient points are indicated. Whenever a direct Convention existed, the postal rates of the two countries were generally equal, except for the rounding of the different currencies.
- When mail was carried with the mediation of a third country, the rates of outgoing mail were generally different from those of the incoming mail. It was also possible to have the mediation of more countries for the same destination.
- The postal routes are indicated when a given mediation allowed for different routings.

The currency in use is indicated with its parity to the main currencies, as this will allow a better understanding of the accountancy markings. In addition, the different weight units and their conversion into grams are stated in order to explain the respective weight progressions of letters and printed matter.
The set of Analytical Indexes was designed to make this volume as user friendly as possible, with a view to allow a quick reference to any desired subject.

POSTAGE STAMPS OF THE KINGDOM OF NAPLES
AND TWO TEMPORARY HALF TORNESE STAMPS OF 1860

In 1858 the first postage stamps of Naples, and on the occasion of the 150th anniversary the study by Emilio Diena about the postage stamps of the Kingdom of Naples.

The well-known monograph, first published in a series of articles in the magazine "Il Corriere Filatelico" between 1929 and 1931, and later in the edition of 1932, is properly considered as Emilio Diena's masterpiece.
The work is the result of several years of research and study in a subject which is really difficult to deal with, due to technical and graphic problems (plates, double prints, papers, shades of colour) and historical and postal-historical aspects.

Emilio Diena was able to solve many issues and to organise the material found in a perfect way so that his work is still a reference point for specialists.

Such a result was obtained even thanks to a team effort: his son Alberto spent several months in Naples to look for the official documentation; Emilio Diena had the opportunity to consult the most important collectors of the time; to plate the "crocetta", he was given the photographs of the 87 copies of that rare 1/2 tornese kept in the Tapling collection by Sir Edward Demy Bacon.

The present new edition, included in the series "the Recoveries", is like the anastatic reprint of 1992, with preface by Enzo Diena, except for its layout.
The three tables on their own with the reproductions of the varieties of the 1/2 tornese Croce di Savoia postage stamp have been included in the volume.
Several illustrations of all the stamps.

THE COLLECTION
OF FONDAZIONE BANCO DI SICILIA
POSTAGE STAMPS

Fondazione Ignazio Mormino of Banco di Sicilia keeps, among historical and antiquarian property, a prestigious philatelic collection, presented in this volume, which is the first of a series devoted to the Foundation's possessions.
The collection includes 1482 items in 900 really rare postal documents relevant to the first issues of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, which were used in 1858 in the Kingdom of Naples and from 1 January 1859 in the Kingdom of Sicily. The latter are known as the most beautiful stamps issued by the Old Italian States: the portrait of Ferdinando II was engraved by Tommaso Aloysio Juvara (1809-1875) from Messina, one of the best engravers in the middle of the XIX century.
To complete the work, the editor, Nino Aquila, has added material coming from private prestigious collections.
In the chapters before the presentation of the stamps, the volume follows the history of the issues in their historical background, the route and postal situation in Sicily in the XIX century, and the formation of the collection.

New edition revised and updated, with a short historical introduction.
The catalogue is divided into three parts.

In the third part, there are the postmarks used in Lucca and its territory, before this area became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.

FROM CARBONARI REVOLTS TO CIRO MENOTTI 1820 - 1831

The History of the sacrifice by the Hero of Italian Risorgimento and of Carbonari revolts from 1820 to 1831 presented through documentary material. The research is based on the original documents of the time, all illustrated, sent or spread by the Postal Service or carried by horse-couriers.

After the Republican revolution, Napoleon period, Murat, Italy is again at the mercy of oppressive governments. Thanks to the improvement of the road system and the following development of communication, information and news about what is happening can circulate easily, thus generating groups of people well informed and aware. Since the resulting rebellion cannot be expressed openly, many secret Societies and Confraternities arise.

The book revisits their story, follows the events and brings back to life the act of courage of a great son of Modena, revolt heart, Ciro Menotti.

HISTORY OF POSTAL COMMUNICATION IN THE ISLE OF SARDINIA
Catalogue and valuation of postmarks and cancellations 1792-1920
By Cagliari Association for Philately and Numismatics

History of postal service in Sardinia and catalogue of all the marks used in the island from the prehadesive period to the 20's of the Twentieth century, the result of many years of research and study of thousands of documents.

The authors follow the development of postal communication in the island through the different historical steps and the political-institutional background, and place the marks in their historical-political context, of which they are unmistakable evidence.

The present work provides many updates to what known before. It includes cancellations relevant to sea and railway services, but not those of military mail and of the Kingdom of Sardinia fleet (1848-1861) as they were not used in the island.
