SOME HINTS OF MILANESE HISTORY FROM THE XIV TO THE XIX CENTURY
THE POST IN MILAN 1849-1859
CATALOGUE OF CANCELLATIONS AND POSTMARKS IN MILAN POST OFFICE

with the cooperation of Gabriele Cafulli, Francesco Luraschi, Massimiliano Ferroni, Giuseppe Antonio Natoli

Description and cataloguing of the Lombardy Venetia postmarks in the Post Office of Milan, from which all correspondence transited, in the period from the introduction of postage stamps to the liberation of 1859. A great variety of uses, shapes, colours, a continuous experimentation of new technologies for the production of handstamps, inks, stamps, papers.

For each handstamp, the characteristics of the impression (size and type of characters); any changes made over time and, when significant for classification, the evolution of the impression in the period of use with different degrees of wearing; the intended use specifying if and when the handstamp was used; the total period of use and the period observed for each intended use; the degree of rarity for each type of use (stamp or cancellation).

Maximum space for "typological" cancellations and postmarks, i.e. those regularly used for a certain period of time or even occasionally in very specific situations. Only a nod is given for the errors in the dates (missing, inverted, etc.) Exhaustive and complete the classification of squared and small circle stamps based on different types in perfect chronological sequence.

Some sections complete the catalogue: examples of the various cases of error in the date composition, registered letters, more details.

Thanks also to the cooperation of enthusiasts and scholars of the most diverse disciplines, the work presents, in addition, Milan postal history from its origins to the end of Austrian domination, the postal reform, postal rates and services, the first and second issue postage stamps, insights, a historical overview.

SCATTERED PAPERS
Garibaldine correspondences by and to Ippolito Nievo
Insights into Sicilian postal history
1859-1861

The Sicily of 1859-1861 told through postal history and Ippolito Nievo letters. Some insights into an extraordinary period, with gattopardesche atmospheres, which preceded the Unity of Italy on the island, analysing the effects of revolution on the postal system and the correspondence of a brilliant and idealist young man who spent last months of his life in Sicily following Garibaldi's troops.

From the preface by Giulio Perricone, President of the Sicilian Philatelic Union
"The two collectors authors of this work [...] if on the one hand have added a piece to the history of the patriot who was wrecked on the journey between Palermo and Naples in 1861 [...] on the other have enriched, with a learned publication, the great chapter of Italian postal history, of Sicily, of the Garibaldian period, of the emergency mail systems connected to an insurrectional situation."

From the introduction by Francesca Tamburlini, Head of the Manuscripts and Rare Items Section of "Vincenzo Joppi" Civic Library of Udine
"The text [...] turns the attention on some almost unexplored aspects of these writings, that is on the "conventional" elements and marks found on the envelopes [...] without neglecting the texts of the letters that are resumed and cited to make the meaning of those external signs better understood. [...] The essay of the two authors comes to the rescue and opens up a new world, guiding us from the place of departure of the letter to its final destination [offering] of these Ippolito's documents an additional reading."

THE POSTAL REFORM OF 1863 IN THE KINGDOM OF ITALY
Laws, Agreements, Documents, Rates

The Postal Reform of 1863 marked a turning point in the Italian postal context. The birth of the Kingdom of Italy compelled the Legislator to elaborate a rule which, after all, would not displease anyone from North to South.

The Law of 5 May 1862, n.604, which reformed the postal system, cannot be regarded as an end in itself but merely as a link between a fragmentary pre-unity postal period and a modern one after the unity of Italy. For this reason, the historical exegesis of every content is essential, by verifying all the transformations that regulations have undergone in the years before and after 1863 directly from the original texts.

The Author investigates this important historical moment in a new way, to leave the pleasure of personally verifying the legislative sources to scholars and collectors. More than 600 colour images, indeed, show, in original, more than 80 laws, agreements and decrees reported in full or with the most significant and relevant articles that retrace postal regulations from 1818 to 1888, highlighting the evolution that the various rules have undergone over the years.

This process is accompanied by more than 250 postal documents that testify the regulatory changes that have taken place mainly with regard to rates but without neglecting dates, routes and historical news.

The volume, elaborated with material from the Author's own collections, set up in many years of passionate researches, ends with a detailed list of all laws and decrees in chronological order.

UMBERTO NOBILE AND "NORGE" TRANSPOLAR FLIGHT
history, mail, documents and memorabilia

This is an adventurous and charming journey to conquer the North Pole, in the 90th anniversary of the Expedition, in 2016. Umberto Nobile and the history of Norge transpolar flight, narrated by means of more than 450 images of philatelic and complementary documents: photos, postcards, air letters, telegrams, invitations, menus, magazines, postage stamps, vignettes, cancellations, medals, calendars, ...

The enterprise, accomplished in 1926 by the intrepid Umberto Nobile, Roald Amundsen and Lincoln Ellsworth, on board the airship "N 1", later named "Norge", was possible thanks to the intelligence and to the perseverance of the Italian fearless General of the Aircraft Engineering, designer and creator of semi-rigid airships. Nobile directed the flight of "Norge", from Rome to the islands of Svalbard, and from the archipelago, across the North Pole, up to Teller, opening the Polar Route.

From the encounter between Roald Amundsen and Umberto Nobile, to the preparation of the expedition, to the modifications introduced to airship "N 1", to the route to follow, to the choice of the crew, to the supporting bases for the airship, to the materials, to food, to clothing, to fuel... up the realisation of a journey intriguing and rich in hidden dangers.

Bibliography
FOREWORD by Fiorenzo Longhi

It is clear from the first pages that this book is what is called a "labour of love", an absolutely uncommon work, the result of the dual unbounded passion for aviation and for "aerofilia", and written with skill and balance without any of the two subjects prevailing over the other.

It is difficult to resist the fascination of the events relevant to Umberto Nobile and to the conquest of the North Pole with his airship N.1 named "Norge", that the author narrates accurately both from the historical and chronological point of view and from the aerophilatelic one, without neglecting the interesting, and sometimes unique, complementary documents.

There is, in the first part of the book, an accurate analysis of the cataloguing of the known air letters of that period that goes far beyond, as to precision and critical analysis, the one of my catalogue "Aerofilia Italiana", by which it is inspired.

The author rightly and proudly highlights the world record of 91 transpolar air letters carried aboard "Norge" from Spitzbergen base to the North Pole and to Alaska.

Among the above mentioned letters, on page 67, the reproduction of the only air letter, up to now, known with Ciampino cancellation, the handwritten address and the additional franking: a jewel in Milisenda collection.

The second part of the book includes a detailed list of postage stamps, cancellations, postcards, commemorative air letters of the post-war period, medals, calendars and magazines both of that period and of the modern times, that leaves us astonished for its completeness.
Also Lauro, in the province of Avellino, Umberto Nobile's birthplace, is recalled together with "Umberto Nobile Museum" devoted to the General.

The volume, very well illustrated also with period photographs, maps and documents, while reminding us that exciting part of the history of aviation, describes, gradually, types and characteristics of air mail and of the postmarks and cancellations used. The work is the exact expression of "aerofilia", that is the close link between aeronautic and airmail history, enriched by the study of air letters and of postal issues.

It is a work that honours not only the Author, but also the aerophilatelic research for the decisive contribution that has offered, and still offers, to historical research in general.

An extensive bibliography and a detailed index make further surveys and consultation easier.

******************************
PREFACE by Emilio Milisenda

Philatelic passion, that I had since my early age, has accompanied me over the years to the research and to the deepening of the study of aerophilatelic and complementary documents. During this route, I often chanced upon enthusiastic records of "Norge" airship Polar Expedition.

The material recovered in numerous years of patient research, and that I have catalogued in chronological order, from the preparation of the Polar Expedition, by Umberto Nobile, until the overfly of the North Pole and the landing in Alaska, has impassioned me so much as to make me feel as if I was participating in that epic enterprise.

The conquest of the North Pole, accomplished by the intrepid Umberto Nobile, Roald Amundsen and Lincoln Ellsworth, on board the airship "N 1", later named "Norge", was possible thanks to the intelligence and to the perseverance of the Italian fearless General of the Aircraft Engineering, designer and creator of semi-rigid airships. Nobile directed "Norge" flight from Rome to the islands of Svalbard, and from the archipelago, across the North Pole, up to Teller, opening the Polar Route.

This work, that retraces its history, is divided into two parts.
The first one deals with the proper Expedition of airship "Norge" in 1926, and summarizes the chronological events of the various phases by means of photos, postcards, air letters, telegrams, invitations, menus, magazines.
The second part includes the summary, as far as possible, of the philatelic and complementary commemorative material of the Polar Expedition, and related to the characters involved, up to the present days; postage stamps, vignettes, cancellations, postcards, medals, calendars, ...

The various publications, books and specialized magazines, such as "Il Polo", "Aida Flash", "Turinpolar" have been important to deepen the historical knowledge about "Norge" Polar Expedition and the environmental one about the Arctic.

The classification of the documentary-philatelic material of that period has been possible thanks to the well-known catalogue by Fiorenzo Longhi printed in 2007 (updated in 2011) "Aerofilia italiana - Catalogo storico descrittivo 1898-1941", that was primary for cataloguing the aerophilatelic production and the complementary documentation. My reference to classify modern air letters has been the "Catalogo generale della posta aerea in Italia 1941-2015", by Paolo Pellegrini. This work of mine shows no valuations, for which reference should be made to the above mentioned catalogues.

The images included in the various pages, partly in reduced reproductions for reasons of space, make the adventurous and fascinating enterprise easier and more noticeable in its entirety: from the encounter between Roald Amundsen and Umberto Nobile, to the preparation of the expedition, to the modifications introduced to airship "N 1", to the route to follow, to the choice of the crew, to the supporting bases for the airship, to the materials, to food, to clothing, to fuel... up the realisation of a journey intriguing and rich in hidden dangers.

ITALY! WAKE UP!
A "BOOT" FULL OF POSTCARDS
all the symbols of our Homeland

PREFACE by Maurizio Pagliano

In a roundup of 232 pieces, from end-nineteenth century to present days, postcards reveal themselves as spy of Italian people collective imagination. An imagination that drove them to nationalistic fanaticisms, but sometimes to critical and not without irony visions too.

Like any other State, Italy is symbolized by its own flag but its three colours are enough too. A Monarchy until 1946, Italy was symbolized by the King and, perhaps, even just by some of the House of Savoy's attributes. Sole Country with an immediately recognizable shape, Italy coincides with it but the "boot" is often represented upside down. The Mother Country, like any allegoric device of academic matrix, shows Herself in ancient clothes that, depending on the circumstances, match Her austere image with others of mythological matrix, gathered from the Roman world or associated to the Founding Fathers of Risorgimento. It was during interventionism that Italy took young, attractive and even audacious likeness and motions. During the twenty years of Fascism, Italy coincided with the symbol of lictor's fasces and this was often replaced by the Duce's image.

In conclusion, Italy is so varied that suspect has arisen that its symbolic value is uncertain. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why the Mother Country was mocked, in recent years, together with all the other symbologies swinging between rhetoric and kitsch.

For the first time a book devoted to the international routes and rates of mail from and to the Old Italian States published in Italy. To allow reaching a broader audience, the authors have preferred to write it in English.

The aim of this book is to explain the postal rates and routes of mail from and to the Old Italian States from 1850 to the introduction of the Sardinian / Italian rates in 1859-1861. In two cases the analysis was extended to 1866 (for Austrian Venetia), and 1870 (for the Papal States). In fact the conquest of Rome, in September 1870, signalled the end of the last Old Italian State.

The countries are divided by continent, and are presented in alphabetical order. Within each country the following information is presented in chronological order.
- In relation to the direct postal Conventions, their effective dates and salient points are indicated. Whenever a direct Convention existed, the postal rates of the two countries were generally equal, except for the rounding of the different currencies.
- When mail was carried with the mediation of a third country, the rates of outgoing mail were generally different from those of the incoming mail. It was also possible to have the mediation of more countries for the same destination.
- The postal routes are indicated when a given mediation allowed for different routings.

The currency in use is indicated with its parity to the main currencies, as this will allow a better understanding of the accountancy markings. In addition, the different weight units and their conversion into grams are stated in order to explain the respective weight progressions of letters and printed matter.
The set of Analytical Indexes was designed to make this volume as user friendly as possible, with a view to allow a quick reference to any desired subject.

Bibliography
Paolo Vaccari took up the hobby of philately and postal history as a child by collecting postage stamps and participating in exhibitions, conferences and seminars. In 1977 he decided to put his wealth of experience and knowledge into practice when he turned his passion into a business to which he could dedicate all his time. The postal history and stamp business was enriched with the publishing activity in 1989, together with his daughters, which came to publish important volumes of philatelic literature, some of them written by Paolo Vaccari himself. From this date onward he has published about 100 catalogues and numerous treatises on postal history, among which the "Catalogo Vaccari - Francobolli e storia postale - Antichi Stati Italiani, Governi provvisori, Regno d'Italia - 1850-1900". The catalogue has reached its XIV edition, after 20 years of publication, and over the years has received prestigious recognition nationally and internationally. Furthermore, "Vaccari Magazine", whose editor is Paolo Vaccari, has also achieved excellent worldwide recognition and celebrated thirty years in 2018.

Paolo Vaccari received the Philatelic Oscar from the Italian Academy of Philately and Postal History for the numerous studies he has published.
For the volume "Sicilia 1859 - Comparative plates of stamps" he received the award of the Italian Philatelic Press Union.
He has received over one hundred awards of recognition worldwide for his written and published works.
He also received the "Regione Toscana" cup and the "Fiorino d'Oro" for displaying specialized collections centred on the Grand Duchy of Tuscany philately of the XIX century.
In 2008 he received the "Ragno d'Oro - UNICEF" award in the trade category, an award granted to people from Modena who have contributed to increasing the prestige of the city of Modena within the country and abroad.

He is a philatelic expert for the C.C.I.A.A. and the Court of Modena.
He has taken part in appraisals and provided expert analyses for Credit Institutions.
He is a member of the national register of journalists, special section, and of the "Unione Stampa Filatelica Italiana" (USFI).
He was a member of the "Club Elite de la Philatélie" of Monte Carlo, presided over by Prince Ranieri, a closed number club in which the 100 most important philatelic experts worldwide may take part, receiving the highest Monacan recognition each time, the Ranieri gold medal.

CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD
The stamps issued by the organizing and winner countries of football world championships
1930-2006

With the cooperation of Pierangelo Brivio

Preface by Maurizio Tecardi, past President of the Italian Union for Collectors of Olympic Games and Sport

Introductory essay by Danilo Bogoni

Half a century of development, names and results recorded by specialized philately written by Nino Barberis, international thematic judge

Interview to the collector Pierangelo Brivio

Devoted to Football World Championships, the volume lists, describes and reproduces the stamps issued by the countries which organized the event and by those which won it, including the issues by colonial territories and the items connected to the happening.
The work covers the history of Championships, from the first edition of 1930 to 2006, but there is something more: South Africa, as the host country of the event in 2010, started its promotional campaign through the postal system in 2006.
Completely in colours, the book follows the same layout and general organization as the volume "John Paul II - Visits of Hope". There are some opening pages and then one chapter for each Championship, with information and details on the event, and the reproduction and description of the stamps and souvenir sheets issued.
For every Championship, a peculiar aspect has been added in order to underline historical-political facts (the division between the Arab world and Israel), promotional choices (the French "Merci les bleus!") or technical aspects (the packets of Swedish stamps or British varieties), thus exploiting all the possibilities for deep and broad studies offered by philately.

The needs of football fans who are interested in more specific details for each happening have been considered: a journalistic presentation of main football facts, a series of data (teams, scores, winner team players), help in widening the picture obtained through postal issues.
The stamps have been reproduced full size (only some souvenir sheets have been reduced). To help collectors in their research, the numbering of the most important international catalogues have been included; (in alphabetical order) Michel, Scott, Unificato and Yvert & Tellier. There are no valuations.
Fabio Bonacina, a journalist, mainly works in public communication, but he also writes about stamps and the post. The newspapers and magazines that have published his articles include "Cronaca filatelica", "L'arte del francobollo", "Vaccari magazine", "Esperienza", "Giornale di Brescia", and "Italia oggi". He is President of the Italian Philatelic Press Union since 2014, and editor of the daily web magazine of philately and postal information "Vaccari news" (www.vaccarinews.it) since 2003.
He has been awarded the prize by Usfi (Italian Philatelic Press Union) in 2010, he has obtained the award for journalism by the Town of Riccione in 2006, and the oscar for philately by Circolo filatelico numismatico reggiano in 2002.
For this publisher he has written the books "Propaganda con i denti - Il francobollo come mezzo di comunicazione nelle relazioni internazionali, il secondo dopoguerra"; "La salma nascosta - Mussolini a Cerro Maggiore dopo piazzale Loreto (1946-1957)", published in two editions; "Giovanni Paolo II - Viaggi di speranza - I francobolli del mondo testimoniano le visite di Papa Wojtyla", translated into English and German (English edition "John Paul II - Visits of hope - World stamps witness the travels of Pope Wojtyla"); "Campioni del mondo - I francobolli dei Paesi organizzatori e vincitori dei Mondiali di calcio 1930-2006"; "Buon Natale! JOHN PAUL II
VISITS OF HOPE
World stamps witness
the travels of Pope Wojtyla

Many stamps have been dedicated to John Paul II.
This book describes and reproduces in colour the stamps and souvenir sheets connected with the 104 travels completed by the Pope outside Italy - official stamps and souvenir sheets issued by both the countries visited and the Vatican City to commemorate the visit or the themes (historical, political, religious, social…) connected with the visit of the Pontiff.

This study also includes the issues that do not directly concern the stay, but which refer to events or celebrations that the Pontiff recalled or participated in during his stay.

There is a chapter for each journey with the description of the visit and the themes dealt with, a brief account of the social and political situation, reproduction of the stamps connected with the journey.

47 opening pages illustrate the key moments in the life of Pope Wojtyla through the many stamps that were dedicated to him (for the Holy Year, the 25th year of Papacy, stamps for his birthdays and for his death, the vacant Papal See, Italian stamps and Vatican stamps, exhibitions and much more).

THE MAIN CHARACTERS: THE JOURNEYS
This work considers the 104 journeys that the Vicar of Christ undertook outside Italy throughout his Papacy, following the criteria put in place by the Holy See.
A chapter is dedicated to each journey in chronological order, presenting details of the postal issues distributed for the occasion, and ideally retracing the itinerary followed by the Pontiff. Both the issues produced by the countries that hosted the Pope over time and, at the end of each chapter, those issued by the Vatican in connection with the same itinerary are reproduced and described.
For the countries that received him, the research has involved the periods immediately before and after the visit up to approximately one year after the event: in fact, various realities, rather than announcing the experience, prefer to comment on it afterwards. In some cases, therefore, both focuses are highlighted.
The Vatican, on the other hand, has always upheld its own tradition: it waits a certain length of time - usually one or two years - and then it issues a commemorative series, generally dedicating a stamp to each itinerary. For example, the five projects completed in 1999 (Mexico and the United States together, Romania, Poland, Slovenia, India and Georgia) are celebrated with the same number of copies, which came out on the 1st September 2000. Sometimes more general subjects are added, as happened on the 3rd December 1981: alongside the places visited the previous year we have the papal coat of arms (50 lire) or His Holiness giving a blessing (900 lire).
To define the historical moment and provide further details in order to take both the journey and the circumstances in which it took place into consideration, a brief account of the visit is also given through the writings of journalists at the time or, subsequently, of the experts.

NOT JUST A PASTORAL VIEWPOINT
The creation of this collection aims to go further. Various visits were distinguished by one or more prominent themes, commemorated by special stamps issued around the time of the Pontiff's visit.
These include historical anniversaries, events, religious ceremonies that are worth noting: they are not strictly linked with the Pope's visit - although the Pope himself is involved - but they can help us fully understand its context.
His first stay in Argentina, from the 10th to the 13th June 1982, had one main motivation: to attempt mediation between Buenos Aires and London, divided by the bloody Falkland-Malvinas conflict. Of course, the South-American country highlights the presence of the Bishop of Rome on the 12th June, but the issues also help us understand the climate at the time, such as those from the 22nd April where the islands are shown as being Argentinean.
Another example: from the 6th to the 16th October 1989 the Pilgrim visited, in order, South Korea, Indonesia and Mauritius. Seoul did not issue any special stamps, but on the 4th October an 80 Won commemorates the 44th International Eucharistic Congress, organised in the Asian capital and attended by the Pontiff.

From the foreword by HRH Maria Gabriella of Savoy: "History seen through postage stamps, cancels and postal documents; it is quite original even from the standpoint of politics.
I became immediately enthusiastic about the idea of following my father's kingdom in 1946 in that peculiar way."

To show that specific and very interesting moment in Italian history, when the Kingdom of Italy came to its end, postal documents are really important as they allow us to follow "day by day" the historical development.

And it is a "postal calendar" which guides us through the 36 days relevant to the Kingdom of Umberto II, the "King of May", last King of Italy. Letters, postcards, documents which follow the events from 9 May 1946, the day on which H.M. Victor Emmanuel III abdicated the throne in favour of his son Umberto, Prince of Piedmont, to 13 June 1946, when H.M. Umberto II decided to leave Italy following the results of the 2 June 1946 referendum, through which the Italians chose between Republic and Monarchy.

Mail, images, documents, showing also previous and following moments, contribute in creating a complete picture of the period. They have been selected in order to enrich and deepen postal-historical knowledge.

The authors

Philately and postal history of Ethiopia of the period 1895-1936 are well documented; however, until now, no comprehensive documentation was available for the period 1936, end of the Italo-Ethiopian war, to 1974, year of deposition of Emperor Hailé Selassié I. This book now fills the gap.

Throughout the book chapters devoted to the historical backgrounds summarize the facts of the different periods and in some cases indicate the reasons for some issues.
The period 1936-1974, from the end of the Italo-Ethiopian war to the deposition of Emperor Hailé Selassié I, a rather elusive period for the Ethiopian postal history, has been studied. One chapter devoted to the post offices during the Italian occupation reports all the towns and villages that had a post office and the number of different types of cancellors used. Another chapter deals in detail with the postal arrangements of the period January 1941 - 31 January 1942 during the liberation of Italian East Africa (A.O.I.) The types and numbers of Military post cancellors used in Ethiopia during the liberation war are reported together with their period of use in the country.
All the sets issued after the restoration are described in detail giving information not reported in the stamp catalogues. New information is included, therefore: the reasons for the issues, the number of sets printed, the reported and some unreported varieties both of colour and of overprinting and much more information not generally available to collectors.
Many unreported facts deriving from unpublished studies by the author are also included in this new book.

The appendices are an important addition to the book and include a list of the Ethiopian post offices in the period 1942-1974 and a list of the known cancellors with the reproduction of most of them.
The most interesting and new appendix concerns the postal rates of the period 1942 to 1974 which until now were a mystery. The author obtained from U.P.U. the official documentation for surface and airmail rates that were not even available in Ethiopia, thus enlarging the knowledge and the scope of the Ethiopian postal history. This aspect of postal history is completed by the study of the airlines operations from 1940 through the restarting of the Ethiopian Airlines in 1947 and to 1974.
Other appendices include a list of postal stationery, postal cards and registration labels.
An elusive topic is the postal rates of the Italian East Africa, a very difficult sector with some information that shows its difficulty. Other appendices covering other aspects of postal history are also included.

A table of equivalence between catalogues will help collectors of different countries to recognise the sets and stamps that are hidden in the numbering of other catalogues.

Italian Postal Rates from the Italian States to the Taking of Rome 1850-1870

For the first time, all the domestic postal rates of the Italian States before the unification are presented in an elegant and important volume. The summary tables accompany the short text dealing with all the rates for letters, printed matter, samples, also referred to weights and postage other than the first.

The work illustrates, for every State, all the rates from the introduction of postage stamps to the transition to the Kingdom of Italy: during that complex period, between 1859 and 1861, the introduction of Sardinian rates was gradual and distinct in the different regions. The volume continues up to 1866 for Venetia and up to 1870 for the Papal State.

Domestic rates and those abroad with the French mediation have been included. Some short and unknown rate periods enable us to identify important rarities.

However, the present work is really valuable in that it is richly illustrated, with hundreds of high quality colour photographs of the postal documents belonging to the author's collection; they represent the most important rates described. Letters of Lombardy-Venetia, Sardinia, Parma, Modena, Romagne, Tuscany, Papal State, Naples and Sicily lead the readers through an evocative journey in the world of mail during that wonderful period, from 1850 to 1870, two centuries ago.

To complete the volume, some notes, graphically presented to be immediately recognizable, on the rarity of some franking, of which the author has recorded, after accurate research, the number of known exemplars.

Since the publication of the addendum it seemed necessary to have a more global, complete and detailed vision of the postal history of the early period (1867-1908) and to correct prior information that seemed incorrect. Thanks to the results of recent researches this task has been now achieved and the postal history of the pre- U.P.U. period has now been outlined in its essential features.

This completely new book includes many subjects not treated in the previous book such as detailed studies on the Napier expedition with some unpublished information, on Egyptian and Italian offices in Ethiopia, and a new study on the mail abroad by non-French means. One chapter devoted to the newly discovered early cancellors, a study on mail of the Italian-Ethiopian war of 1895-96, on the French Post of Harar and the use of its cancellors from October 1899 are also included.

Other chapters have been completely revised such as those concerning the years 1899, 1904-05 with the description of some newly found postal rates still unpublished and the organization period (1908). Each chapter includes detailed information on the known mail.

A detailed report of all cancellors used in Ethiopia with all types and colours, including those of Obock and Djibuti, is also included. Reproductions, with a few exceptions, are new and unpublished.

An interesting peculiarity is the fact that a floppy disk containing the essential information on all known covers, postal cards and picture postcards of the period 1895-1908 is enclosed to the book. The "List of Ethiopian mail" (Lem) floppy disk is PC and Mac formatted; Acrobat .pdf, Microsoft Excel .xls and html files.

A "definitive" text on the postal history of the pre-U.P.U. period of Ethiopia.

MODENA 1852-2002
150th ANNIVERSARY OF ESTE POSTAGE STAMPS
COMMEMORATIVE EXHIBITION
Postage stamps and covers
the most important rarities of the Duchy of Modena

OFFICIAL CATALOGUE
The present catalogue illustrates fully in colour more than 1000 items exhibited, following the order of the guided route. At the beginning, the volume has been enriched with some introductory essays, and at the end with an exhaustive bibliography.

The exhibition, organized on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Este postage stamps, was anthological and at the same time educational as it showed, with postage stamps, mail and documents, what had been possible to find in private collections.

The volume starts showing how mail was sent before the introduction of postage stamps in the postal system of the Duchy, going on with essays, printers proofs of the types adopted and the franking on mail addressed to the Italian territory and abroad.

On show, also all the impressions and the cancellations used in the 32 postal offices which operated in the Duchy territory; among them some are extremely rare, besides the only known from the postal office in Zocca.

A wide part was devoted to the Risorgimento period (1859 - II War for Independence), showing all the historical and postal-historical events which had taken place in the territory.

A unique presentation was devoted to mail which reached destination in a very short time, quite impossible today even using the present technology such as trains, planes and motorways. In spite of the use of horses, before the slow post experimental trains, thanks to postal agreements between the different states, they could deliver letters sent early in the morning from Modena by the same day in Milan, Florence or Venice, by two days in Turin and by three days in Rome!
