ON THE TRACKS OF HOLY YEARS
Pilgrimages of faith by means of postage stamps

Result of a deep historical and archival research, the book reports in detail, by means of postage stamps, all the 26 Ordinary Holy Years, besides the numerous Extraordinary ones, that are here examined both from the historical - religious and from the adventurist point of view.

Every Jubilee described in the volume is always accompanied by a rich iconography of deliberately philatelic type, inspired by postage stamps issued by Vatican City, Italy, San Marino and the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. All data related to series, date of issue and identification of the State that has produced them are listed in the chapter "Iconographic References". The postage stamps issued to celebrate Jubilees are always represented inside a frame with halo.

The introduction of every single character, the tale of facts and events, the iconographic choice referring exclusively to the images of each postage stamp, everything is deliberately formulated according to a journalistic approach and comes out particularly pleasant.

USFI: 50 YEARS ON THE NEWS

With the collaboration by Beniamino Bordoni

The volume recreates and narrates the history of the Union of the Italian philatelic press by means of cancelled postcards, postage stamps, letters, magazine covers, documents and pictures taken on the occasion of various events. From the first assembly, that took place in Florence on 8 May 1966, are reported, year by year, the documents, the episodes, the news, the curiosities, the relationships with the Ministry of the Italian Post and the postal service, the whole associated with the passion for philately and post. A work apt to safeguard the historical memory of the protagonists that, during the years, have contributed to keep the Union alive.

TRAVELLING POST OFFICES IN SICILY
Catalogue of the postmarks used by travelling offices and by couriers
from 1862 to 1973

The subject dealt with is related to the non occasional use in Sicily of travelling post offices, both overland and by sea route, that have been working in a period that can be defined "classical" for the Italian postal history, that is the one included in the first century of adjustment of the administrative activity after the Unification of Italy.
An amazing number of postmarks has come out, attesting the fervour with which the development of communications was welcome and encouraged also in Sicily. The largest possible number of the postmarks described has been reproduced in the book.

COMPENDIUM OF THE

Preface by Clemente Fedele

Version extended with numerous new insertions compared to the edition in Italian.
The term "Post", before being used to suggest an administrative reality and as a synonym of exchanges of letters, was born to suggest specific transports able to have messages delivered as fast as possible. From the first horse messengers we arrive at the resident post masters, with their assistants or postillions originating the service of horse mail. Various evolutions come in succession between the late fourteenth century and the mid sixteenth century; in the seventeenth century the letter mail service was born, a model that remains valid until the arrival of the train and of the electric telegraph in the nineteenth century; finally we find telecommunications, telephone and telematics.
An essential and exhaustive excursus at the same time.

THE 1/2 TORNESE POSTAGE STAMP OF 1860
"SAVOY CROSS"
Technical-descriptive study with the reconstruction of the table
Second Edition

Introduction by Raffaele Diena

Thanks to the process the authors have used for the plating of each of the one hundred "varieties", through computer comparisons and thousands of photographs available, the identification, with mathematical accuracy, of every position of the "cross" is now possible.

For the present second edition the whole volume has been revised, corrected and enriched in the light of new archive acquisitions and of photographic documentation. In most cases, pictures have been replaced with higher definition ones.
Compared to the first edition, photos are now more complete with all the hundred 'varieties' also of the Trinacria.
Three unreleased sections have been added: the chapter about forgeries, deepened and enriched with an extended treatment of the forgeries by De Sperati, in order to allow for sure their recognizing; an appendix about Trinacria (postal use, cancellations, forgeries); and, in the end, an appendix with the first attempt of reconstruction of the second plate of 1/2 grano of the Kingdom of Naples.

From the preface by Raffaele Diena.
"The present grand work about a sole postal value used only for some months in the period just before the unification of Italy represents, for sure, a display of courage and resolution by the authors. It is not so easy to obtain so many documents and information, even though they had an important reference point in the work by Emilio Diena about the postage stamps of the Kingdom of Naples. [...]besides the postal-historical research, with rates and use of the time, the different steps in the realization and technical characteristics in details, it is quite relevant the fact that the present volume has as its main aim the identification, with mathematical accuracy, of every position of the 'cross'. The authors have concentrated their efforts in this, thanks to the process they have used for the plating of each of the one hundred 'varieties', through computer comparisons and thousands of photographs available."

THE POSTAL REFORM OF 1863 IN THE KINGDOM OF ITALY
Laws, Agreements, Documents, Rates

The Postal Reform of 1863 marked a turning point in the Italian postal context. The birth of the Kingdom of Italy compelled the Legislator to elaborate a rule which, after all, would not displease anyone from North to South.

The Law of 5 May 1862, n.604, which reformed the postal system, cannot be regarded as an end in itself but merely as a link between a fragmentary pre-unity postal period and a modern one after the unity of Italy. For this reason, the historical exegesis of every content is essential, by verifying all the transformations that regulations have undergone in the years before and after 1863 directly from the original texts.

The Author investigates this important historical moment in a new way, to leave the pleasure of personally verifying the legislative sources to scholars and collectors. More than 600 colour images, indeed, show, in original, more than 80 laws, agreements and decrees reported in full or with the most significant and relevant articles that retrace postal regulations from 1818 to 1888, highlighting the evolution that the various rules have undergone over the years.

This process is accompanied by more than 250 postal documents that testify the regulatory changes that have taken place mainly with regard to rates but without neglecting dates, routes and historical news.

The volume, elaborated with material from the Author's own collections, set up in many years of passionate researches, ends with a detailed list of all laws and decrees in chronological order.

POST IN THE PROVINCE OF BERGAMO
from the Lombardy - Venetia administration to the Sardinian - Italian one
1850-1866

Completely colour illustrated with the reproduction of letters and postmarks, the work is composed of two parts.
In the first one a description is given of the geographic, political and economic situation of the province of Bergamo in the years over 1859, the year of the annexation to the Kingdom of Sardinia; in this context the postal services on the territory, both in the Lombardy - Venetia period and in the Sardinian - Italian one, are examined too.
In the second part, that constitutes the catalogue with relevant valuations, all the 76 post offices that have operated in the province are listed alphabetically (except Bergamo, country seat, put at the beginning) and classified on the basis of the canceller postmarks used in the period examined.

The pertaining historical administrative period is taken into consideration In the introduction of the different postmarks, for the so called "pre-existing" offices, i.e. instituted in the Lombardy - Venetia period.
For the offices of new institution, created progressively from January 1860, the belonging to the Sardinian - Italian period is implied, therefore the relevant valuation is not conditioned by the peculiar historical period.

The canceller postmark, when unique, or the different and subsequent ones, when more than one, are described for every single office.
Some postmarks, in the period of their use, were impressed with inks in colour different from black, in shades that go from light blue to green.
The first and the last date known are reported for every postmark of every office.

PARCEL POST
in Italy 1881-1914: a philatelic history... and not only

The author has undertaken a study of the service basing himself on all the legislative and normative sources of the first 35 years of the service (1881-1914) gathering and analysing an enormous amount of official documents.

The volume contextualizes the historical situation that has determined the beginning of the service with the signature of the agreement of Paris of 1880; it clarifies what laws, regulations and instructions discipline the service both for inland and for abroad, for the Italian Offices abroad and for Italian Colonies; it explains the evolution of the various kinds of postal bulletins and their franking methods; it specifies the evolution of the services and of the rates for inland and for abroad (the rates for abroad are gathered in 35 pages and they had never been published before); it quantifies the service evolution with official statistical data of forwarding and it introduces a picture of the goods sent (275 millions of parcels, of which 26 to foreign countries, have been sent from Italy in the first 35 years of service, for a total transport of over one million of tons of goods); it presents interesting philatelic considerations, including the estimate of the existing material and the rarity of the various forwarding bulletins.

In the Appendix, the complete list of the paragraphs about "Postal Bulletins", pertaining to the service of parcels put into circulation from 1881 to 1914 and one "overview" with the colour reproduction of 64 postal bulletins particularly interesting with their relevant description.

THE FRANCO-SARDINIAN ROUTE IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
Conventions, regulations, tariffs
1818-1851

In 1815, under the Restoration, France has found again the frontiers of 1790.
From 1814, the Kingdom of Sardinia (Savoy, Piedmont and Isle of Sardinia) is restored and enlarged in 1815 with the annexation of the ancient Republic in Genoa. The Principality of Monaco passes under the Sardinian protectorate.

The work studies the postal relationships between the two countries and the whole transit that passes through this important axle in Europe.
At that time, Italy is divided into nine sovereign states and one province of the Austrian Empire: the Kingdom of Lombardy - Venetia. Each one has its postal practices, its currency, its units of weight, its postal rates.
They are all described with precision in the enclosures that also show the conventions, the agreements, the ordinances, the postal circulars and the rates that discipline these relationships.

The text explains in detail most of the casuistries that may be met, with the models of franking and taxation. It contains the reproduction of more than 260 letters, from the most common to the rarest, all meticulously described.

Garibaldine correspondences by and to Ippolito Nievo
Insights into Sicilian postal history
1859-1861

The Sicily of 1859-1861 told through postal history and Ippolito Nievo letters. Some insights into an extraordinary period, with gattopardesche atmospheres, which preceded the Unity of Italy on the island, analysing the effects of revolution on the postal system and the correspondence of a brilliant and idealist young man who spent last months of his life in Sicily following Garibaldi's troops.

From the preface by Giulio Perricone, President of the Sicilian Philatelic Union
"The two collectors authors of this work [...] if on the one hand have added a piece to the history of the patriot who was wrecked on the journey between Palermo and Naples in 1861 [...] on the other have enriched, with a learned publication, the great chapter of Italian postal history, of Sicily, of the Garibaldian period, of the emergency mail systems connected to an insurrectional situation."

From the introduction by Francesca Tamburlini, Head of the Manuscripts and Rare Items Section of "Vincenzo Joppi" Civic Library of Udine
"The text [...] turns the attention on some almost unexplored aspects of these writings, that is on the "conventional" elements and marks found on the envelopes [...] without neglecting the texts of the letters that are resumed and cited to make the meaning of those external signs better understood. [...] The essay of the two authors comes to the rescue and opens up a new world, guiding us from the place of departure of the letter to its final destination [offering] of these Ippolito's documents an additional reading."

1867 - 1884
THE VI ISSUE OF AUSTRIA IN THE AUSTRIAN COASTLINE
(KUESTENLAND)
150th Anniversary 1867 - 2017

The book presents a large postal documentation of the Kuestenland, according to the office of departure, of destination, the rate, the means of transport, the agreements, quoting the most significant dates of postal-historical nature. Maps, posters and decrees have been inserted, all with short notes whose goal is to make their meaning clearer, placing them inside a precise geographical-historical context. Between the most significant dates to remember, 1 October 1869, when the first Correspondenz-karte or postcard in the world was introduced, 1 July 1875, year in which the Treaty of the General Union of Post entered into force and, on 1 August 1878, was renamed becoming Universal Postal Union, hence the various conventions between the States expired except for the Treaty of the Austrian-German League, that remained in force being the most beneficial for both communities. The opening year of the Post Offices, the types of cancellations known, the colour and the period of use are reported.
